I have the exact same problem with my 2009 Aveo5, still under warranty... 'couldn't replicate problem' a couple weeks ago, taking it back, noise is annoying!

Any suggestions on what to tell them?

if you have a suspension knock you pretty much have to check everything that moves when the knock occurs..

aside from the strut the parts that more are: ball joint, control arm bushings, strut mount, tierods/ends, swaybar endlinks, sway bar bushings, even the gears in the rack.. (thats front end).

GM is replacing 2 strut mounts, and the tire rod, which is apparently part of some mass steering assembly that will be replaced at the same time. Thank heavens that I still have 4 months of warranty, scared about after though, the car has been such a POS, in the shop at least 15 times in almost 3 years and 26,000 kms...
