basically, you are wanting to go from a GM Family 1 Engine to a Family II Engine, the most common swap for an Aveo is the LSJ Supercharged 2.0L from a Chevrolet Cobalt SS; GM made the Bellhousing pattern virtually identical for ALL of its 4 Cylinder Engines, so bolting your Optra Engine to your Aveo Transmission won't be a problem. pretty much the only problem you might have is making the Engine Electrical system play nice with your Aveo's Body Electrical system, depending on whether your aveo is an Auto or Manual.

Haven't been on here in a while, but what about the newer 1.4L turbo motor... wouldn't that be a more worthwhile swap ? More power stock than the Optra 2.0L.

I have to disagree with the prospects of the 1.4T over the 2.0 Optra motor. In the unlikely event the a 1.4 motor could be found in a scrap yard, it won't be a cheap purchase. In addition, the easiest way to get the motor up and running will be to use a stand-alone EMU. Trying to retrofit the standard 1.4 ECU will probably be more trouble than it's worth.

I could be mistaken but I believe the Optra ECU is a direct plug in to the early model Aveos. Aside from the swap the only thing needed should be to modify the 1.6 engine harness to the 2.0 layout.

for the first generation you are correct. But since you will be plugging in the ECU, and such, most of the better junk yards include the engine harness if they are including the ECU in the deal. So you would not need to modify the harness, you just swap it ALL in.
