      Catalytic converter failing?

The car is making a knocking noise at 2500 rmp's and hesitates a little bit at that point. But above and below 2500 its fine.

Mechanic couldn't figure out the noise but did suspect the cat...

      help?

didnt you say you had a new cat? i dont think above 2500 would be good too if the cat is clogged.

nevermind. I think the engine dropped a piston or a valve and piston are making contact. Why me

Neighbor said the car sounded like an "old vw diesel"

$40-50 for a tester that will tell you what the problem is, is better than continuing to guess at it.

if he does not at least get a compression tester. to see if/which cylinder is leaking.

you could also pull the valve cover and pour oil on each lifter, and hope it solves the problem, not likely, but it might show you the problem. crank it over by hand to have the lifters and cam moving. just be sure to drain the extra oil out of the pan before restarting the engine.

any general power loss aside from 2500? or is it just noise? did you check the oil pump?

Well my step dad drove it 30 miles yesterday to my brothers baseball game and when he got there he told my mom he didn't think it would make it home since the noise was all the time now. He got home thankfully and it makes a racket.

I checked the oil this morning before heading out and when I wiped the oil on the clean rag the oil shimmered with metalic flakes. I am guessing that the engine spun a bearing or two or more....

So, I'm at a loss of what to do. Get another engine, transfer timing stuff over, figure out why it failed and spun a bearing, sell the thing at a coparts auction and pick up a grandma owned buick century... no idea

Maybe I was seeing things, I just spoke with my neighbor and he said it sounded like a bent valve.

I need to find a borescope.

I need to take video of the engine running but does the aveo engine use hydraulic lifters? If so that might be the cause of the noise since it is coming from the top End.

      Just a thought.
