How do i get the best possible performance?

I LOOOOOVE MY NEW CAR. I BOUGHT IT USED WITH 50K MILES ON IT, AND AFTER A MONTH IT BROKE DOWN. I TOOK IT IN WITH THE WARENTY, BUT IT WAS THE RECALL ON THE SPARK PLUGS/BOOTS! THANK GOD! I AM LOOKING FOR WAYS TO MAKE IT MORE GAS EFFICIENT (NOT THAT IT ISN'T ALREADY), LIKE TIRES, WHEELS, GAS I SHOULD USE, OIL. ANYTHING TO MAKE IT THE BEST POSSIBLE IT CAN BE. I ALSO WANT TIPS ON BRAKES, AND SOUND SYSTEMS.

A few things I did to my fiance's 5sp '04 Aveo: Synthetic Mobile 1 Economy oil and Synthetic Tranny/Power steering fluid, Under Drive Crank Pulley, welded straight pipe in place of the cat/muffler and took the baffles out of the air box inside the fender and removed, cleaned, reinstalled the Throttle Body. It runs like a champ and she loves it's new attitude and get up and go. It got 34.9mpg all in town on the last tank. She bought it new and has done the MPG math every single tank over the last 153K and She's never ever seen it that high. The next thing I'm gonna do is TIG up a better Intake System and increase the fuel pressure a little bit.

Driving technique is the single largest 'mod' you can do to get better mileage. If you're driving it and you need bigger brakes (which I highly doubt for a street driven vehicle), you're not driving to get good fuel mileage.

the fact that it gets 34mpg surprises me. Mine wont even get over 27mpg. but i do love my aveo

So, I've been using unleaded gas, should I be using better?

nope. regular gas is what you should be using.

Most of the "mods" for better mpg are about picking specific things. Like tires in compounds and sizes. Wheels that are light weight and (controversially) offer little wind resistance. Having good oil, changed regularly. Taking care of the transmission. Lightening the car. Converting to electric and such.

Truly gaining mpg requires technique as well, Driving at appropriate speeds in certain gears. Warming up the car as fast as possible. Not running power draining accessories. Keeping windows up.
