That does take a lot of time when you're also trying to work and search for another job

Dennis, don't expect anyone to believe your 58mpg claim til you can present it maturely and back it up with scientific reasoning: i.e., precise, clear communication backed up with hard data.

By contrast, for example, there is a fellow over on GMinsidenews.com named Wolfman01 who's figured out how to get over 40mpg in his 2006 Aveo5 5-speed... but if you ask him how, he won't mention his mother sitting next to him as one of the reasons he gets good mileage.

When I asked him how he acheived his mileage, he listed these rules:
      * First: slow down: max speed of 55 mph ever.
      * Minimize hard acceleration.
      * Don't let the car warm up in the driveway.
      * Look well ahead in traffic, allow the vehicle to "coast" often.
      * Plan stops into routes, to minimize time spent bouncing back and forth
      * Maintenance - synthetic oil, correct tire pressure, car in good tune.

He's regularly able to get 40+ mpg -- but with fairly extraordinary means. His lifetime average is 35mpg.

Now, unless your mother is a sorceress, what gives?

My conclusion: it's interesting Dennis, that you got 58mpg, but anecdotal. Try again another time, let us know how you do. If it did happen once, and I'm hard pressed to believe you, do let us know if you can repeat the experiment.

Dennis' Mileage Score to Date: 0 Points.

who's to say that this "wolfman" is a credible source? for all you know he can be bull****tin you. look, dennis says he made a great acheivement with his aveo. thinking rationally, it is a very difficult thing to prove unless you are there with him or whatever. not saying you cant question it but stop givin him such a rough time about it.

nice find with the calculator deal btw!

Wolfman's numbers are credible, for one thing, because his gives his lifetime average along with evidence of record keeping... and because he demonstrated the relationship between specific behavior and better mileage. He presents himself well, with a mastery of the rudiments of spelling, grammer, and punctuation.

It's possible to follow a series of Wolfman's threads on the subject, making it clear his mileage figures are not flukes -- but the result of diligence.

Dennis claims a one-time outragious figure 56% higher than the 2007 EPA highway figure (already considered so unreliable they were changed in 200, offers no real correlating data except that he went 90kph, and presents the information in poorly constructed English. His suggestion that his mother was sitting next to him is amusing.

Wolfman's story is plausible -- and boring even: he exerts himself and gets good results.

Dennis' story is interesting, you want to believe it, it's amazing, it's fantastic... he exert's very little effort and bingo, is rewarded with mileage that's... er... historic!

      Sorry. No Points for Dennis.

yeh, and other people have laid claim to over 50 mpg with their aveos. are you gonna try and pick apart their stories too? i mean good lord, y does he have to say what happened to him in a scientific fashion? as far as u and i know, denis is not a scientist, but rather an everyday joe like you or i. he doesnt have to have PeRfeCt GraMMEr when posting his situation. in fact that has nothing to do with what this thread is actually about-at all! nor does the fact of whether or not his mother was in his car with him matter to you so stop incenuating that his mom is a scorceress or whatever cus thats just ****in rude. (yeh i swore so what!?!)

let me get back on point here, there is a chance that he got over 50 mpg. but to compare his result to some other guys result dont mean ****. all cars are made different even if they are the same. even if they are the same motors they are going to act differently according to what is done to the motor, how it was broke in, machining flaws and so forth. then there are always different circumstances that we can and cannot control. ie tire pressure and wind are an example of each. u see what im saying.

Dennis, you're probably better off not saying your 58mpg is factual, unless you have some real insight into how you achieved it and how it can be replicated. Otherwise you just look silly.

      Facts are verifiable.

Your claim is 40% higher than a high mileage figure by someone who supports their claim with five fuel-saving behaviors -- and backs up their data with a lifetime mileage claim as well. Again, is your mother magic?

Your posts show a sloppy disregard for writing precision (lack of capitalization, mispelled "believe," mispelled "prove"). Are you this sloppy and hurried when calculating mileage? It's an easy inference to make.

Your mileage claim is an anecdote... an amusing anecdote, not to be believed.

this is a forum not a scientific essay, plus most of the people on this forum are aware that english is my second language, and when i post here its when im relaxing from school and writing formal essays, and scientific papers (i have a power enginering degree, and working on my BA in heath science) so don't be picky about my spelling and don't insult my intelligence.

oh and please don't be ignorant because my username is deniswhite1, and my name is Denis, but you keep calling me Dennis.

my secong point is: what makes you belive that other guy who gets 40mpg, and explains why he THINKS he gets it in a scientific way is telling the truth. what if he is making it up? have you seen paper work and gas recipts, oh and his odometer? i belive i deserve a bit of trust beause i have never made a false statment on this board ever since i joined in the summer of 2004, and was selected to be one of the the admins for the board year after. (just before the switch to this domain).

basicly what im saying is what its your problem bro, have i done something to offend you?

PS: i was doing 90km/h not mph reread my first post stop comfusing others with changing my numbers
Its more fun to drive a slow car fast, rather than drive a fast car slow!
