      Oil Change Horror. RIP.

So, it's a sad day for my car.

I went to do a routine oil change and I noticed a tiny oil spot in my driveway. No biggie. I got the old plug out and replaced it with a new one from Autozone, and in goes the new oil- oh wait.

The oil plug Autozone gave me was too long. Which made the oil pan crack on it's way in, in turn sending new oil all over my driveway.

I tried to save as much of the good oil as I could with a fresh drain pan. After all was said and done, I emptied the clean oil back out into the fresh jug so it could be re used after I get the new pan installed.

If it couldn't get much worse, I found iron/aluminum shavings in the little bit of oil that was left. Like, alot.

With only 55k on my car, that. S-U-C-K-S.

I'm not even really sure what to think.

Where were the metal shavings? In the jug of oil? In your oil pan, you will have metal shavings from the first day you get your new vehicle. That is the wear and tear of an engine. One way to keep your oil free of the shavings or cut down the recirculation of shavings throughout your engine is to put a strong magnet on your oil pan and/or your oil filter. That way, you throwout the old filter when you do an oil change.

I dont know if this helps you at all.

Well, 350 and a flatbed trip later, my car's back on the road.

It's going in to the dealership for a look see soon to see why the engine is eating itself up.

The metal shavings came out of the oil pan, one rather large one (but still small) and the rest were very tiny shavings. I emptied the catch can of dirty oil into a strainer (probably too big) but didn't get anything there. I held the catch can up into the the sunlight the bottom looked like it had glitter all over it from everything that came out of there.

note to self. CHECK PARTS WITH OLD PARTS BEFORE INSTALLING. AUTO ZONE LIVES ON GIVEING WRONG PARTS.
