How's changing a valve cover gasket..

Any special sealant needed. Anything unusual to replacing one? Mines seeping a lil bit of oil on the engine. Where to get one the cheapest? www.rockauto?

I just had mine changed along with the sep belt, mine was leaking oil like crazy, but it seems all they used was the gasket, gasket was like $30 though, charged me $40-50, a really good deal

yeah, you just use the gasket. check ebay, but rock auto is typically cheapest.

just undo all the bolts, and plug wires, take it off, clean it, swap the gaskets put it back together.

      Cool thanks for the tip's!!

For a wheel bearing and a Gasket Partstrain is cheaper than rock auto, by almost 20 bucks! but I like rock auto's website 100 times better. But price will probably have me choose pt. Shipping killed the RA auto deal they wanted 17 bucks (8.25 each item)while PT wanted 12 for both. Maybe I live closer to their warehouse?

The bearing may not last as long I guess? National brand is $41 @ rock
SFK @ PT for 30 bucks.

SKF is a reputable bearing maker. A lot of the wheel bearings on big rigs are SKF.
I leased Pontiac Wave from September 2006 to August 2011.

We'll here's whats played out so far...

Got the bearing really quick so thats good, but I got an email from PT that the valve cover gasket is out of stock, and they just refunded my money. So there goes saving a few bucks on shipping.
I was on hold seeing if they could just send me another brand Gasket, and not charge me shipping again...
While I was waiting on endless hold I hopped over to Rock Auto, saw that a Fel-pro gasket, a name I know, could be ordered for just 3 bucks more total price. So I ordered that instead. PT has sent an email saying I'll be credited the cash, but I havent seen it in my acct yet..I guess it may take a day or 2.

It's actually a bad idea to use sealant on the valve cover gasket. If you are not careful some could drop into the engine, and cause some problems.

Got my gasket today. Looks good. Except It only has 15 o-rings for the bolts and I think there's supposed to be 16...wtf. Installing it tomorrow. I'll have a write up on my blog soon along with a wheel bearing.

Service Manual calls for a dab here and there. Thanks for the tips, but I'm gonna follow the SM recommendations..

A dab here and there is just used to help hold the gasket in place, the recomendation is not for sealing purposes
