How much oil do you have in the engine? Dumb question but gotta ask. If you don't have a lot on the dip stick that might be your problem.

it's at the full mark with new oil and filter. the oil light was staying on all the time so I replaced the oil pressure switch and now it just comes on at an idle and goes off above 1000 rpms.

it was after the oil change but not right afterwards. probably about 800-1000 after oil change.
not sure of the brand of filter, been taking it to the same place for years.

If the crankcase oil level is full and the indicator light is flickering that is the classic sign of a bad 'oil indicator sending switch'.

I've had this happen on several Asian cars I've owned over several decades. On some the switch craps out after about 30K miles. Another 30K gone by, and it's time to install another switch. I haven't needed to do it on my Aveo yet, as it has low mileage.

Don't worry. It's a very inexpensive part and really easy to do as a DIY job, if you are willing to get underneath the car. You won't even need to drain the oil. Just buy the switch, find where it is located on the engine, unscrew it, install the new switch, reconnect the sending wire on it's connection, and you are all done.

That was my first thought as well, until I read in post #3 from the OP that he had already swapped that out. Now it could be that the new sender is bad, miscalibrated, or a lot of oil got onto the connector. But OTOH, there might actually be something more serious going on with this Aveo. The fact that the light had been on solid before the sender swap doesn't sound like a happy thing. Is this one where the timing belt broke and bent some valves? Here's a prior thread with some additional info if that's the case.

there is one thing that can be done to see if its the pressure switch going bad again, or if there is something more seriously wrong with the engine: Remove the sender, and put a pressure gauge in its place.

Good idea, including the info in the other thread.

How many miles are on this engine?
