Shifting at 3.4? Sounds a little high. I thought that the sooner you shift, the better mileage you get, because you keep the RPMs constantly low. I guess it could bog it down slightly. I thought that was only an issue in diesel engines. I'll try shifting at about 3K RPM and see what the results are.

The trick is to get the right balance. Not too low, you'll accelerating forever, never get in to closed, where you want to be, or too high, where friction and open loop make the engine gulp gas instead of sipping like in closed loop.
I leased Pontiac Wave from September 2006 to August 2011.

Hmm.. not sure what the "open and closed loop" terminology means. Do you mean that it's best to shift after the period where the opening the throttle causes acceleration, and before the point where it only revs higher without response?

Some cars have a light that comes on that notifies you of when to shift for best fuel economy. Could this be added on to an Aveo?

yes, its a shift light. you can get em for pretty cheap. i think dlspeed has em for 40$. i got one on the way from him...

if you have an auto, you do not need one.**
You can not commit crimes in a Aveo. Its just not fast enough.

A great place to put it would be where one of the black covers pop out by the hazard switch on the console.

      Re: Aveosam's MPG Thread

haha one day ill actually time to update this, especially now since I am not going away to school anymore for this fall for architecture....they wanted me to do 5 more years for a bach in architecture (already did 3 for an assoc. in engineering) when I can do two more years and get a civil engineering bach. it will be a hell of a lot cheaper and ill def make more money. Plus i might even have time to do some upgrades to the aveo

anyways it seems like i get mainly 32 mpg and my drives usually consist of my 10 min drive to work everyday and 25 min drive to my gf's ( its highway but it also has a good amount of traffic lights) so i think that is pretty good.

      Re: Aveosam's MPG Thread

Here's the result from my week of shifting at exactly 2500 RPM: 37 MPG

I also did alot of engine-off coasting to boost my figure, as well as not using the a/c at all. Not bad, but as conservatively as I drove this week, I was expecting to break the 40mpg mark one more time.

I wonder if downshifting has any negative effect on gas mileage?
