Not sure if it would hold up to the heat of an HID kit either. But if so that might be a very good bet.

if it cant take the heat of the hid, it wont be able to take the heat generated by the engine and the hot weather.

today is rainning,,, mine has no leak YET...
i used heated glue . .. like a pack of plastic bars,, and put it into the heat gun, and it turns to liquid , that kind,

So aveogyrl did an awesome write up of this mod. Best in my oppinion I've seen on the site. Here's the link below. It doesn't discuss your HID's though...I've been looking around, but nothing specific about how best to seal it up. I did read that a few people disliked the silicone sealant in general because it makes it even more difficult to seperate the unit if you needed to do it again. One thing I read that I really liked and it makes total sense was that as you know you use the oven to heat it and loosen the adhesive, but once the project is done, you put it BACK in the oven and this will soften up the remaining factory glue again and that plus whatever sealant we end up choosing should do the trick. Great idea! Also the second link I added here is for this mod on a different vehicle. He goes into pretty good detail and he used glad press-and-seal in it! Not sure if any of this will help you since your looking on info on the HID's, but they both go into pretty good detail on the process itself.

vw is where the term "joey mod" came from, the person credited for doing it first was named joey.

most silicones have temp specs that would outlast the housing.

Good info. I haven't really seen many people talk about how much adhesive to apply to reseal it, mostly just seeing one tube of the sealer as a material listed. I assume it's different in each case, but any input's helpful.

      Thanks!

when i did mine, i just left all the glue in from the factory, when i pulled the pieces apart i "smeared" the original glue back where it belonged. Then after i put it together i mask taped the faces of the lens etc, i laid a ribbon of clear rtv into the seam, smeared it in, and untaped. have had no leaks, and i believe it would come back apart again.

That's great. I can imagine the affect the smearing has...probably will create a much cleaner surface to reattach to. Gonna try it this weekend. Thanks!

      Hey Daug152,

I was looking at different clear silicone sealants and I found one at advanced autoparts. The item description states that it can handle temperatures ranging from -75°F to 400°F. I don't know anything at all about HID's so if you know how hot they get, that should answer your question as to whether or not it's a good sealant in your case. Good luck!

thats the same brand an sealant i used, but not on a aerosol. just the metal tube.

if the housing and lense got to 400* touching the lights while on would burn your hand like putting it on the stove.

Yeah, I'm going with the one in the tube. It's half the price and it'll do the same thing. I think the Aerosol form has less control which could potentially suck if you get sealant in unwanted places.
