      Re: cut springs

where the spring is heated it turns back to normal steel. so it is not good to heat them at all,
you basically take the "spring" out of that section.. may be ok and not break. but it is a weak point.

if you cut them i recommend using a cut off wheel, and even then when i do it i turn the air down so it grinds slowly not heating the spring much at all..

i have never had cut springs fail on me, i have seen heating springs break, and i have even seen stock springs break. its not usually as catastrophic as people say, but it will ruin your day.

This is the best picture I could find.

I didn't expect much of a drop in the back as there is a LOT of spring and I only removed one coil. To cut them I used a 4.5" angle grinder with a metal cutoff wheel. Be sure to cut exactly one coil. Going straight down like this allows it to seat as the stock coil did. Only cut one at a time as you can always remove, but you can't add. Here is a picture of the cutoff wheel in action from when I made a Custom LCD mount for our bedroom.

Thanks sibachad for posting the pic of your drop with 4x1 spring cut. not sure If I would want to go 1 more than that in the front, but that looks great with the 14's.

Also thanks to petrified.rabbit for the clarification.

i would think you might be ok with cutting stocks, as they dont fell like a progressive spring, but stock springs might be more compromising than lowered springs being the lowering springs have a higher spring rate..
I cut one from the front and one from the rear. The rear sat lower after that, they seated fine and ride was no different than it is now with the H&R's... it was crap then and is crap now... I really need some struts
would you cut more from the front if you were to do it again?

      Re: cut springs

i can't say i would be able to cut more than a 1/4 coil at this point, or my wheels will be sitting on the fenders.

but if i had more room, i think you could go another 1/2 coil. any more than that i dont know. if i remember the gaps between coils get wider toward the center of the spring, so another coil might turn into an additional 2-3" (without looking)

here is how i did mine. mount the springs, but the car down, and measure how much more drop you want. take that measure to the loaded spring, and that is where you want to cut.. i tend to cut one full coil at a time for the spring seats.. but with the floating top suspension, you can turn them to accommodate 1/4 and 1/2 cuts...

with 10000 miles on these springs they still ride like the day i cut them, no broken springs, no additional or strange settling.

      Re: cut springs

You only wanna cut 1 coil on any 1 spring, otherwise you will bounce all the way down the road.

      Re: cut springs

it's generally best to cut exactly 1 coil at a time so the spring will seat the same as prior to cutting it. This assumes the diameter stays the same, on the front, the more you cut, the more the diameter increases and the less likely it is to stay seated.

      Re: cut springs

I cut 2 coils at once on each spring and never had a problem, but i need to raise it now, that 2.0 in the front makes the tires rub when i turn haha
