To get the optimal performance shouldn't the internals be upgraded also???
Depends. I know of a few VW mk3 VR6 turbos running stock internals and pushing 500hp, reliably.
well what are you doing NA or boost?

Those aren't any lighter than stock and are only good to about 15psi.
Plus the crank won't take much over that...
But if you really felt compelled you could do it :lol:

Unless you're going to boost high though, there isn't a need to. You could gain better power, cheaper, with a new flywheel and higher compression through X16XE pistons and a head shaveQuote:
