Need advice on shifter linkage.

I just bought a 2008 chevy aveo 5 speed. It shifted great when i bought it. A few hours later i was in 5th gear on hwy. Came to a stop. Went to shift into 1st to take off and car was still in 5th gear. Turns out the shifter linkage came apart at a connection near where it meets transmission. I put the linkage back together at the connection. Now I can shift again but now I dont have reverse, if i put it in reverse it seems like its in 3rd gear or something. And i dont have first gear it also seems to feel like its in 3rd gear. Should i have synchronized the gears some how before reconnecting shifter linkage? If so anyone care to explain what yo do? Im new to the forum, thanks for any advice in advance.

if you know what gear you are in, you might just need to adjust the shifter at the adjustment rod where it comes out of the firewall.

do a search for short shift I tried to explain it in that thread.
