I have an 04 with 144,000 miles on it and it needs a clutch.I am seeking any info on the replacement procedure and what parts are involved.I am currently laid off and can't afford to take this to a dealer.Any responses will be greatly appreciated.

just buy a clutch kit. off ebay. get a upgraded clutch though.
you have to split the engine from the trans unbolt the stuff from the flywheel, bolt the new stuff on (with loctite) and then put the trans back on the engine.
you might need to pull both, you might be able to sneak the tranny out. It sounds and seem involved on the ground. but with a lift a guy could do it in a day.
most tranny places could probably do it for like $400 with parts.. if you shop around (depending on your area)

Normally when replacing the tranny, you have to pull the axles to get the tranny out. Pulling the axles will spill all the tranny fluid. I am talking from other FWD car experience, not the aveo in particular but I cant see how it would be different.
The actual clutch replacement will take no more than 15-20 min. Dropping the tranny will take 3-6 hours depending on how mechanically inclined you are. Then you have to add on the 3-6 to put it back.
yeah i dont know the aveo tranny that well yet. and it has been too cold to go look. but if the axle CV bolts to a flange then it does not need fluid (like a vw). But if the splines of the axle go into the tranny. you will lose fluid. Unless you drop the whole K frame and just split the engine and tranny (which could be almost as easy sometimes but not specifically with the aveo).
When you say to buy an "upgraded clutch off ebay" how do I know it's "upgraded".There are 3 clutch kits currently listed on ebay. 1)phoenix friction, 2)valeo brute series 5, 3)luk. Any thoughts on any of these three manufactures?

upgraded would have more hold. there are already two clutches available for the aveo from the factory, one has 30% more hold. This means it wont slip as easily, for more horsepower, going up hills, or just from the weight of the car.
I would get one like that, it won't be any more expensive or harder to push the pedal. but when compared to the stock clutch in the same car it will last longer.

only because it includes all the things you will need for install. and i have used valeo parts before. The luk might be just as good, but i have never used one. and the phoenix might be the best, from what they say, but i have never heard of them.
the luk and the phoenix will require you buy more parts also.
i would probably check at an advanced or something similar, and the dealer for their clutch prices before spending $150 though. i doubt the dealer will have it anywhere close. but napa or advanced might..
