If you can trace & splice wires (VSS, injector signal, neg, pos), you can make your own slimmed down version of a ScanGauge.

It improves your awareness of how you drive your car in most cases... They say it helps driver's with heavy foot to see the actual MPG as they drive. Also it helps erase codes and read them right there, which is useful.
