Won't shift into 5th gear

My son has a 2009 Aveo5 LT with a 5-speed manual transmission. He said that on the way home from work, he discovered that the car won't shift into 5th gear, although shifting from 1-4 is no problem. He claims if he tries to shift into 5th, he gets 3rd gear.

Any ideas on what may cause this?

Did you ask your son that?

I'd take a look at it yourself and see what happens when you try to shift into 5th. Does it simply not move over that last notch? Sounds pretty odd, but if I had to start somewhere I'd look at the linkages on the transmission to see if they're bent or something weird like that.
