From time to time, one of my brake lights will go out, then the other will.. then they both will. then they will both come back. then they will both go out again. this makes my car illegal to drive.

check the ground wire.

Check the sockets too, might be dirty or corroded.

as it turns out, my sub raped the bulbs to the point they were just about broken. sometimes they would get raped back into the correct position. replaced the bulbs and watched it happen again while i was parked.. oops.

Time for an LED conversion.

Depends on the route you take. Do some research. I think a full conversion of bulbs with exception of headlights I had estimated at a few hundred. Or you could get they ebay blacked out led tails. Again do some research. The bulbs aren't cheap but should survive the bass and last forever to boot. To start cheaper only replace the trouble bulbs.
