Stunningly fresh Aveo owner from New Jersey

      Hi,

Since today I'm the proud owner of a 2010 Aveo LS 5!

To be honest, the main reason I got an Aveo is because I didn't want to spend too much on a commuter car. But I might as well enjoy the ride, right? Tomorrow will be my first commute. So I'm a bit nervous. [-o<

      Regards,
      Bart

Re: Stunningly fresh Aveo owner from New Jersey

      Thanks everyone for watching!

No plans to pimp it right now. But who knows what the future brings? I was mainly looking for a very economical commuter. I like small cars, I don't need anything fancy and I like driving stick. All those came together in my new car, so here I am.

It replaces a 2002 Ford Focus that did very well but was starting to fall apart. It had enough issues that made me suspect that passing inspection was going to be costly: running on 3 cylinders (the car sounded like a Chinook helicopter) + gasoline smell through the A/C, popping the trunk would randomly work (or not), the radio died, a suspension that saw 135,000 miles of New Jersey roads and at that point a timing belt replacement cannot be far away either. Did I mention rust at the bottom of the bodywork? That was a second hand car that turned out to have some hidden issues after driving it for almost a year, so I didn't feel like sinking too much money in it.

Old and new. Aah, I forgot: the driver side mirror is held in place with tape. The left front wheel cover got scraped off by a bad pothole, together with the balancing weights. Makes the car a pleasure to drive!

I hope the Aveo will last me for at least 100,000 miles - but maintaining it well and being the first owner of the car should make that not too hard.

Aah: the color. I like a light (metallic) color for better visibility. So when talking to the dealer I told them "but I'm not passing up on a good deal if the car is black or racing red". Well, "racing red" it is.

      Congrats on the new Aveo!

Early impressions? What do you like most / least so far?

What I like most is the intelligence of the car. Radio stays on after taking the key out of the ignition but turns off when you open the door, that kind of stuff. Haven't had the chance to find out if the wipers, just as with the Renault Megane I drove aeons ago, would switch automatically from continuous to interval when the car comes to a halt (say, at a traffic light). Something else I like is the "dark dashboard".

At higher speeds the car is a bit more noisy that I'd like it to be. And during the summer I will find out how brilliant my decision was to choose for window ventilation and not an a/c.

So... what car was your 2nd choice?

Guess that depends where you live. That, and everyone's different in the amount of heat they can live with.

In eastern Ontario, there's only about 2-3 weeks of weather each summer that I'd call "hot". I've never owned a car with A/C.

Get yourself a beaded seat cover for the hot weather - keeps the air moving behind your back and under your butt - makes a big difference.

i have priced out everything to install a/c in my car, have some of the parts, it will be @ $350 in parts (only because i cannot find the 3 a/c lines used...)

look in front of your radiator and on your firewall. My 09 has both an AC heater box with the evaporator already installed in the dash, and the condenser and dryer in front of the radiator. It also appears the AC compressor bracket is already in place along with all the wiring connections.
