Re: So... I'm thinking about a summer bike
In my opinion...
I wouldn't put anything as small as a 250 on the interestate. Most references I got were to start with a 600.
I have only had one bike. Sold a couple months ago due to lack of riding.
1984 Yamaha FJ1100. Old, kinda heavy, but will MOVE if it needs to..
But I am 6'2" and 350 lbs.
I thought the class was worth it.

ive heard from people that have riden the 250 that is unstable at high speeds on the highway
Re: So... I'm thinking about a summer bike
the new 08's? because I have heard different. Now granted, with any small lighter bike, you are more prone to the wind but I heard the newer bikes were much better. You have to expect some instability at high speeds riding something on 2 wheels that weighs less than 350 lbs.

but you still have to do the writen test?
im so gona do that when i move to rochester NY
Re: So... I'm thinking about a summer bike
yeah written test still required because you need to pass it to get your permit and you cant take the class without the permit. the only thing thats waived is the nys road test.

awesome so its official, im geting a bike when i move to US
one more question, how much would it be to insure the ninja 250r NY state in the area of rochester prefrably?
Re: So... I'm thinking about a summer bike
it really depends on type of coverage either full or base liability, your age, location, and driving record all factor into the cost. i'm 44 with a clean record, live in the suburbs and ride a $25000.00 BMW Touring motorcycle which is like the Honda Goldwing and I pay $400.00/year.
Re: So... I'm thinking about a summer bike
I was looking into a 250 as well but after plenty of current riders telling me that it will outgrow you so quickly, I decided to test one and they are quite slow compared to 600+cc. Top speed is somewhere near 100, and even though 0-60 is 5.75s, and this sounds fast especially to an aveo owner, its quite slow on a bike. You gain confidence and crave more speed really quickly on a bike and a 250 should only be ridden by new riders, older riders, or women. Even new riders will question their purchase after a few months. Id rather get a used 600cc cbr or r6.
Re: So... I'm thinking about a summer bike
I'll say that if you're just commuting, a 400 should be fine unless you're cruising on a highway in the prairies or something.
