So... I'm thinking about a summer bike
I don't have a license and haven't ridden even a dirtbike since I was like 14...
...Classes, are they worth it? I've never driven a street bike.
I'm thinking about a ninja 250, mainly due to the $3,500 price tag and astronomical gas mileage... They also seem to have a great resale value. The low output seems like it would be nice to learn on... but will I grow out of it quickly? I don't need a rocket, just something I can get on the interstate comfortably with.
Re: So... I'm thinking about a summer bike
That is the exact bike I am going with. If you can ride a dirt bike, you can ride a street bike. I rode on my buddy's CBR1000RR and it is way to big for me. It is either a used Kawi ZX-6 or a brand new 250. The 250 handles great and is still faster than a car but it is little. The ZX-6 obviously moves like a mofo. I hear alot of people grow out of a 250 really quickly but for me, it will just be a way to get around. If I wanna go fast, I have my other car.
Re: So... I'm thinking about a summer bike
i was looking into a kawi 250r bike before and I heard you out grow it fast...
on a side note with summer bikes. my dad is suppose to be getting a honda v65 sabre in a trade
Re: So... I'm thinking about a summer bike
just remembered the other bad thing about the 250R, there are no more till next year and the markup is nuts. Makes it almost the same price as the 500R

really??
Re: So... I'm thinking about a summer bike
That is what 3 different bike dealers told me. They said they are selling them for 4-4.5K and everyplace I have gone to does not have any.
Re: So... I'm thinking about a summer bike
I'd say get a 600 sport/touring, they are a little slower than pure sports, the insurance is less and the riding postion isn't as bent over. The 250 will be really slow and you'll grow out of it in hurry.
I say, get your licence and course done, than go out and try a few bikes out. It's alot of cash for something that you'll want to sell in a month.
By the way, I ride a GSXR 1100 and a RZ350.
Cheers
Re: So... I'm thinking about a summer bike
not to hijack, but what are the prosidures of geting your bike licence in US, and what is the insurance like for a cheap ass bike?
Re: So... I'm thinking about a summer bike
Licensing depends on the state. Here in Va it's a written test, then a practical road test.
I believe there are some states that don't require a special motorcycle license.
Re: So... I'm thinking about a summer bike
new york state requires a written permit test, then a practical road test as well, unless you take a nys/american motorcycle association approved 2 day safety course which consists of 8 hrs classroom time and 8hrs riding instruction and you must pass this class, then your practical road test is waived by the state because you have the course completion certificate which you present to your dept of motorvehicles and they amend your license right there. typically the course costs about $350.00. this course when completed also entitles you to a 10% safety discount on your insurance for 3 consecutive years.
