Not True. Vista is the beginning of the next gen OS and overcomes many shortfalls of XP, such as addressing memory. Yes it is always difficult to move to a new OS and the only real way to work it out is release it. As others have already said, the next gen, 7, is much better.

As for installing XP, it will be a PIA to find the drivers cause Dell will only list Vista drivers, you have to go to the manufacturer's site for the drivers.

The linux tool listed above will be the cheapest and easiest way. You could probably contact Dell (you're sure this isn't stolen, right?)or go online and order the installation media from them, since you have the key code already. This may be best for a clean install. I would want a clean install myself.
Good point. In a recent Win 7 vs. Vista vs. XP, both Vista and Windows 7 cream Windows XP.
I'd give that Linux CD a try, all you have to do is Burn it, Boot it (nothing to install) and enter the command given on the website to reset the windows password.

Short of formating the hard drive and reinstalling an OS, this is pretty much your only hope.
I leased Pontiac Wave from September 2006 to August 2011.

      nooooooooo

i dont understand, but i have to say apple can work magic in getting people to buy their stuff

example "well i just bought my new nano.....o no, they just put a camera in it, ill have to buy that now too"

apple should rule the world, and steve jobs should be the man to control all

Re: locked out of my laptop

i have used apple computers since 1992. I know enough about ibms but still prefer apple.

everyone i know bitches about how much they cost, but my 2 computers were bought in 2000, and 2001.
I am just now having trouble keeping up, and only thing i do have trouble with is HD stuff.

$1300 computer divided by 9 years= $144 a year. I know people who have bought 4-5 $400 ibms in that time. which would put them at $1600-2000. All the time they bitch about how much my apple cost.

Re: locked out of my laptop

yeah, i guess, but i dont know why anyone would need to buy a whole new computer, espcially a desktop as they can be upgraded very easily, but with the laptop, ram and processor is really the only thing you would need to worry about

though the cheapest mac now cost like $999 with a decent processor and only 2GB ram, and i bought my toshiba for $399 with a turion dual core and 4GB ram with a decent hard drive, and i hope to find me a quad core to fit in here and get 2 4gig sticks in the next year or two

macs are good when it comes to media, which the pc does not compare to, but any problems one might encounter, if any, on a pc, they are simple to fix, and if you cant fix em, you should not have a computer :P

i like vista as it runs good, i just dont like how it uses the ram

Re: locked out of my laptop

I don't get the Apple deal. They must have some sort of Sponsorship at the UW. Seems like I always see Mac stuff. But the general public goes PC.

      Anyway...

      Hijack...

Wanted my next computer to be a self-built desktop, but...

My laptop is too (physically) large. I am starting school in two weeks and want to pick up a new laptop. Smaller than a 17" but larger than a Netbook.
What should I look for? What should I get. Gonna buy at the end of September. Budget should be up to $600 but would prefer cheaper.
      Priorities in my new computer:
      Battery life.
      Hardware longengevity.

What else should I look for?
Probably pick up at Bestbuy or Costco, but I could get something at the PX on our local Military base.
Unless you can come up with a better bang for the buck source. We have Fry's up north.

      Thanks
      Jason
