When you boil it you can just grab it with a rag and pull it off. I just did it saturday, and boiled it again when I was ready to reinstall it. Worked great and no vice marks on it.

Yes. no damage to knob. Just heat and pull it off easily.

      Boiling Water = Free

Bosch Heat Gun = Alot of money alot of us dont have.

Use boiling water and pull it out with a rag.

Anyone done a T-Handle shifter yet??? I have one in my jetta and really want one in my 09 aveo. I don't really need a shorter shifter. Does the stock 5 speed shifter have threads on it under that factory knob?

No threads! I thought it would have that to, but its actually just knurled metal (that fancy little diamond design so something has grip) and then the shift knob is pressed on. Like this thread states, you just take the whole shifter out of the car, boil the knob end for a while, grab it with a rag and yank it off.

what about that safety thing for reverse under the knob on an '09 (possibly other years, idk)? any issues with that after putting an aftermarket knob on?

you need to find a knob with a reverse lock out compatibility. They not hard to find, just a bit more money.

so when i was at the wreckers i practiced and my theory was right it does pull straight up with ALOT of force...

I dont know if that is the same with cars that have the Button shift knob mine is the older one that does nothing..
Did the same with mine. Started trying to twist it off then after awhile I got annoyed and just started yanking on it and it pulled right up. A lot of time wasted on a simple solution.
