      Problem with rear drum brakes

I needed to take the rear drum brakes apart because the self adjuster mechanism had seized.

Basically what happened was I had a devil of a job getting one of the drums off. I had to resort to a puller to finally get it off. In the process one of the brake pad retaining pins broke and one brake pad came adrift in the process of getting the drum off.

The only visible "damage" was the brake adjuster mechanism between the two brake pads got bent and that broken retaining pin.

So adjuster straightened and adjusting mechanism freed up, i try and put it all back together.

The drum goes on and spins freely, the adjuster is slackened off at the moment.

But as soon as you tighten the 2 screws to hold the drum onto the hub, the brakes bind and you can hardly turn the wheel.

      Any ideas?

I did wonder if I had bent the back plate but it looks okay, and putting an engineers rule across the hub and measuring the distance to the backplate it appears the same all the way round.

I am out of ideas on this one, any idea what it might be?

You didn't mention which parts you've purchased, but in any case I'd recommend buying new drums, shoes, and hardware kits.

if the only difference is putting in the screws, something might be bottoming out like the backing plate.

Are the screws drawing in the drum more than where it was free spinning?
