Help: Installing Power Locks (part of SP-101 alarm system)

Hey guys,

I'm new here and this is my first post, however I've been following this forum for a while now. I have a 2005 Aveo hatchback (base), and I'm trying to install SP-101 alarm system with powerlocks. Now I was able to mount the powerlock motors based on the instructions you guys so kindly provided on the forum, however, I do not know anything about the car electrical system, and I'm struggling to actually run the wires from the motors through the door and to the unit. This is my first time installing anything electrical in a car, so you can imagine I'm a rookie. I would be really thankful if someone could explain to me where and to what I would connect the wires from the powerlock motors, and what I would do with the wires coming from the main module. Pictures would be amazing if anyone is kind enough to provide them. I realize I'm asking a lot here but I would be very appreciative.

Didn't the alarm unit/locks come with installation instructions?

If not, I'd start by going to the manufacturer's website to look for them.

At a minimum, you need a wiring diagram so you know which wires connect where.

Right now I have the actuators installed on the doors. My first issue is that, the actuator wires are 22AWG and the wires that I bought to run the wiring from the actuators to under the dash are 20AWG, so would that be a problem if I connect them?

and my second issue is that the kit didn't come with relays, so I'm guessing I'm going to need to of them, one to lock and one to unlock, but the third issue is that the driver door actuator, along with the two other actuators, only have two wires!!! ... I also read on the forum that someone found that their car was pre-wired and had extra relays, how would I find that out?

Sorry for all the questions, but like I said this is my first mechanical/electrical DYI on a car. I would have a professional install it, but I'm a student and I don't have more than $150 in my account right now, let alone have the money to pay someone to do it for me.

The different gauges in wires will be fine.

I don't have much experience with using relays. But I think 2 is what you'd need. The driver door actuator having only 2 wires, means all the control of the doors will be off the remote. The reason you've seen ones with 4 wires is they go to a remote entry box and can open/close the rest of the doors from the driver's lock.

I used a very similar kit to this below.

Is there no way to get a wiring diagram or installation guide for the alarm+locks system? It would make this much easier. Have you contacted the company or checked their web site?

Thank you for your reply, it actually shed some light on the wiring. Unfortunately, the wiring diagram and installation instruction that came with the kit, are extremely vague and unhelpful. That being said, I have a good idea of where to wire what, its mostly just the order of things that I'm supposed to wire things that I'm struggling with.

PoisonIvy, did you use relays yourself? And if you did it would mean a lot
if you could let me know what would be the correct type of relay I should purchase, I've been told 5-pin 12v relays. Also a few people have told me that since I have a 2 wire driver-side actuator that I don't actually need relays, this doesnt really make sense to me but if anyone knows anything about this please shed some light. Seeing as the lock-unlock will be control by the remote, I'm guessimg I would have to connect all the actuators to the control module that came with the kit, then connect the two relays to the control module, and then the car battery to the control module?

In my keyless entry kit, the box that picked up the remote signal acted as relay(s) as well. So I didn't need to add any separate relays. I then added remote start later, which used those remotes instead, and the lock/unlock wires from the remote start were then wired into the keyless entry box.

From the instructions:

It looks like you'll need relays, on page 6. The picture may look a little daunting, but doesn't look that bad to me, even though I've only really used 1 stand alone relay before. (I have put in 3 remote starts, countless stereos, etc.) Pins 86 and 87 on both relays get constant power. Just splice into a constant power wire under the dash. 85's get either the green or blue wire from the alarm. And the 30's then run to the corresponding lock or unlock wire on the actuators. And 87A's are just a ground.

PoisonIvy, I cannot thank you enough for so kindly providing an informative guide for a beginner, perhaps after I go through the processes, I can write a beginner how-to for powerlocks/alarm.

So the kit came with actually some extras beside the SP101 package. In the SP101 package which you so kindly provided the link to, it seems that they only provide you with the receiver. Given that you mentioned you did not use relays, do you think I can do without them, using this kit?

No sweat. Glad to help. It wasn't long ago I was completely new to this as well. I'm by no means a pro, but I've become pretty comfortable giving a lot of car electronics a shot. The biggest thing you can do is master your Google Fu. It doesn't matter what it is, but someone on the internet has probably done it before you. The answers are out there, you just have to wade through the BS to find the answers.

From the link you provided, there's a couple higher rated reviews that explain that they DID have to purchase 2 relays. It looks fairly simple though. You can do it, just Google some youtube videos on "relay door locks install", etc. Take your time and watch some videos on how others do wiring of this sort. This may also be the first time you'll splice into wires and solder as well. It's not that hard, just do a search on technique and tips.

To add, the reason I didn't have to use separate relays, was my keyless entry/power door lock kit was essentially a box with relays and a remote sensor built in. Yours just operates a little different. They probably should have included the relays, and at least a couple comments echo that as well.

Thanks for this my friend, I will purchase relays and update when they arrive. Also what source of 12v would be ideal to tap into?

Use that pictorial I linked a while back. Which means you'll also need to take the steering column cover off to find the connector with the power wire to the ignition. It has to be a constant source of power because it always needs to arm the car and be ready to have you unlock it, which the power for ignition is. It's completely fine to take the power there because it really doesn't draw that much power. If you were running something like an amp then you'd want to go straight to the battery with a fused link. It explains what holds it on, which if I remember correctly is a couple screws on the bottom and there is a screw on each side that you'll need to turn the steering wheel one way, remove the screw and then turn the wheel the other way to see the other one.

Hey so, I cant seem to find any video or pictorial instructions that actually shows the actual wire stripping and connecting. I'm a real noobie here so please bear with me, but am I supposed to just bare the needed ignition wires a bit and connect my relay wires to them? Or am I supposed to cut out the ignition wires and circuit it through the relays
and back to the ignition? If anyone could take a couple of pictures for me it would be greately greately appreciated, I understand its a pain in the neck but I'm willing to reimburse you for it somehow, I'm extremely desperate.

First off, you're going to need some spare wire to run from the ignition to the relay. At the relay use some 'female spade terminal connectors' to plug into the relay. You'll need the crimping tool that is used on the connectors if you don't have one. I see you have a Princess Auto in Hamilton. Get some assorted colors in 18 gauge in 25 feet rolls to try and best correspond with what you're running to.

This is how I splice into an existing wire such as an ignition or power:

I use an X-Acto knife to carefully peel away the wire coating all around (on the ignition wire). Using the tip of the knife just separate the strands a little. Then take your wire, insert it through the middle and give it a couple twists around. Then solder it. I use electrical tape to cover my splice. It's more professional to use heat shrink, but I'm not quite there yet. (Maybe my next installs.)

These and the crimping tool are also available at Princess Auto. Don't be afraid to bring a couple parts in there and ask employees questions, and explain what you're needing it for.

Now this is a lifesaver: It's called a wire stripper. It's for the end of wires, one squeeze and it cuts and pulls off the wire cover. It's listed as $3.49 at Princess Auto.

As you get more experience (and trust me after you nail this, the feeling of accomplishment is addicting), you'll probably be able to visualize where you're going to tuck some of these relays away, so leave yourself enough wiring that gives you some options. It's easier to tuck the wiring away then try and make too short a wiring work in a tight spot. Oh, and buy yourself some zip ties to get the impending mess of wires wrapped up after.

It looks like you'll need 5 relays total if you're also connecting to the trunk release. The picture I attached of the relays shows 3 together. Again, I haven't used many relays in my life, but mounting them together may be a good idea, and then just run wiring to them from the alarm, then whatever wires out of the relay to their destinations.

Thank you for the very very detailed and helpful post. I am pretty clear on everything I think now. I am wanting to tackle this tomorrow and finish the beast once and for all. I just face a few minor problems: I decided that I'm not going to connect the alarm to the factory horn or do any of the other extra steps that would require extra relays, as I only have two in my possession. That being said, I can't seem to find the ground wire location nor the positive parking light location. I found the negative one but not the positive, any insight on where I can find these two? and also where is a good place to mount the shock-sensor?

The positive parking lights should be in a 22-pin yellow plug in the driver's kick panel area.

Ok I am really sorry PoisonIvy, you've been really helpful and I'm starting to feel like I'm abusing it, but I have some more questions:

So, the wiring diagram:

shows that there are two white wires from the module that gotta be contected to the positive parking lights, does that mean that I connect them both to the one positive parking light found in the location that you mentioned?

Also, my Aveo is a 2005 LS, so I don't have a trunk release latch from the inside, the only way to open the trunk is from the outside, and I haven't installed an actuator in the trunk, so is there even any point to wiring up the trunk release wire?

And it says that I would need a relay between my factory horn and the module, but it also mentiones that I may not need a relay if the factory horn is not connected to 12V, so do I need one or not?

Also I don't understand the very bottom diagram, where it says to cut the wire from the starter solenoid to ignition switch and to run it through a relay, which wire do I cut and what is even an starter solenoid...lol I'm sorry but I'm a noobie

Lastly, which one of these relays would be appropriate to purchase? I already bought two from Amazon but that you mentioned I need 5 I gotta buy me some more if I wanna connect everything properly:

Hey no problem. According to the last link I posted for 2005-2006 wiring today, it says to hook one white wire to the purple wire in the plug and one white wire to the brown/white wire.

No, don't bother hooking up the trunk release wire.

You may not need a relay. Hook it up to the black/white wire in the horn switch in the steering column. If it works, awesome.

What that diagram is showing is the key and the starter. ("Starter Solenoid" is a fancy way to say Starter.) The way it stands now, you have a yellow wire in the ignition switch, that runs from there to the starter. So somewhere in there where you can expose some wire you'll literally cut the wire. You'll run a wire from the key side of that (now cut) yellow wire to 87A, and the other side (starter side) of the yellow wire will now run to 30 in the relay.

It looks like the $6.99 relay is the type you're looking for. Plus it has a built in wired socket to make your life a little easier wiring it up.

So today, after 6 hours of straight work on the wiring, it did not work.

I connected the Red from the module to the 12v+ on the ignition harness, and stripped the wire a little bit before the 15 amp fuse and connected terminal 86 + 85 from both the relays to the same Red wire running from the module to the ignition harness.

I connected both the parking lights from the module to the car. I connected the lock and unlock wires from the module to the 85 relay, and connected the lock and unlock wires from the actuators to the 30 of relays.

Didn't do any of the other wirings as it seemed unnessary at this point, I just wanted to make sure that it works first. turned the ignition to on and pressed the over ride button 4 times as per instruction of programming, and it did not flash or chirp or nothing. Tried pressing the lock and unlock button on the remote...nothing.

I feel very defeated at this point, thinking of just giving up on it. The wires were soldered and taped as per recommended. Don't know what the issue is. If there is any final advice, let me know, otherwise I'm just gonna rip the wires out and give up :P.

unless connecting the ignition sense is important, which I didn't do, I simply couldn't find it, the link says it's light green in the ignition harness, I couldn't find this wire.

What you'll want is the PINK wire in the Ignition Switch Harness. (for the Ignition Sense)

I put the ground cables on the metal part of the door, but I didn't secure it or anything...doubt its the ground cable man, grounding is for shorting anyway aint it? should work without.

No, it won't work without it properly grounded. You need to have a solid 12 volt source and a solid ground to complete the circuit. And the metal part of the door likely has paint on it, so even if you had it lightly touching there, it's probably not going to work.

From your description, you should have seen some 'sign of life' from the box after hitting the programming button 4 times. The only 2 wires that are important to see the box come to life are the power and the ground. So the other wires don't mean anything at this point to have power at the box. Hang in there. Go under the dash and find a bolt on the frame of the dash support that is bare metal. Loosen it a little and place your stripped end of the ground wire in, and tighten it back up.

I don't think you're very far off. Might just be a single wire. But start with the basics first, and that's checking red power wire and black ground wire.

PoisenIvy, you were right my friend. I finally installed this damn alarm system after a month of work. The problem was the ground wire not being properly connected but I took care of that by connecting it to one of the bolts in the dash assembly. Everything is working fine, I was able to program the system without any problems. The only issue that confuses me, which is more of a nusense than an issue really, is that everytime I lock the doors by pressing the lock button on the remote, the alarm goes off, and then when I press it again it stops. I guess this is more likely something related to the actual SP-101 Crime Stopper unit than anything else.

I just want to thank you PoisenIvy, because without you this would've never happened and I would've never succeeded. You made my dreams come true man. Would I ever do it again? no, not even for 500$ would I reinstall this again. Was it worth it? Hell Yes! What was the worst part? the wiring and clearing out the wiring. I did a very half ass job with clearing out the wiring, but I don't even care, it's not in the view and it doesnt interfere with anything else in the car nor me while I'm driving, so I'm happy.

Hey that's awesome! Congrats, I'm glad you got it going. Honestly I didn't want to discourage you, but you jumped in to a pretty advanced project without any experience. Anything like a new stereo or speakers will seem like child's play now.

As for the alarm going off on the first lock, that doesn't seem quite right. If I get a chance over the next few days I'll see if I can make sense of it.

Yeah man I would really appreciate it, but after everything you've done I honestly don't expect you to figure this one out too.

Ok, so I thought about it. Do you remember if you hooked up the Green (-) Door Switch wire to the White wire in the harness by the driver kick panel? I think you'd then leave the Purple (+) wire not connected to anything. Our cars have what is called a common negative trigger wire. So when any of the doors are opened it grounds the door switch and sends the signal to the cars computer. When you hook into this, the Green wire picks up on it (and if the alarm is armed) it will set the alarm off. I'm wondering if you hitting the lock button a second time is just bypassing the perimeter monitoring portion of the alarm.
