Especially important in the northern states, where salt is sprinkled all over the roads. I'm near the beach in Florida, so the salty air is not much better and I want to make this car last forever... lol

      Alert! Northern owners....

I cleaned out my inner front fenders today....holy cow, I couldn't believe the amount of packed in dirt!!!

See the pics! This area will surely rust through if this is left unattended. Might take a few years, but watch and see.

I'd suggest taking the lower 2 or 3 bolts out and spraying with high pressure water.

I went balistik on mine and cleaned them with my hands and some tools, even an old toothbrush to really it clean. Then I smeared some old wax I had all over inside of there.

Don't use anything that will scrape the paint, or you'll be in for big rust.

Yes, thats something sprouting on this pile...

Here's a place where rust may likely start: down in the front side fender wells where they bolt to the rockers. There's always a pile of leaves and mud trapped in there, and I periodically take off the mud guards in the wheel wells to clean them out. The road debris seems to kick up into a small opening in the seam between the mud guard and the fender panel, and drops down to the bottom. So far that's the only real preventative rust measure I've taken.
i checked mine when i was fitting the side skirts, and i'll be damned if there wasnt a 3 inch thick, packed like concrete, pile of what i can only call silt. i have no idea how that crap got in there, i had to pull the weather stripping out to get in.

      Re: The Rust Report

so I was doing an oil change today and I figured I'd check the inner fender. Yep enough sand to build a small sand castle. The problem seems to be that there is a drain hole but once you get one slightly large pebble that hole is blocked and the build up begins. I guess I will just make it part of the maintaince I do during oil changes. I was pissed though because I found damage from my car being put on a lift to get new tires As for rust, the inside of the fender is good but the rocker panel has been complete stripped of paint and primer so metal is showing and oxidizing. So this I am taping off the effected section and sanding and cleaning it. Then spraying a good coat of Chip Coat paint to stop this from happening. I also notices some rust on the subfame just behind the engine compartment so I will do the same with that.

      Re: The Rust Report

As for my rust report I have found rust forming in the rear fender wells on both sides in the same spots and the front edge of the hood near the headlights is rusting, in the same spots.
I just want to add that i I hate road salt.

Just for reference, here's a graphic image of just how much damage road salt can do:

The pic is of my 92 geo metro. It was driven in Ohio for most of its life before I acquired it.
