plus aveo has 2 or 3 different 1.4 liter engines worldwide, probably with different engine management and emissions level requirements etc. so you have to make sure your talking about the same (none of which we have in the US). Xiaogary had the 1.4l 16v, he punched it out to a 1.6 and got cams etc and was making like 150+ hp..
As for the manual swap, its been done not to an aveo, but i've done it, friends have done it. The hardest car ive seen it done to is an american s6. (only available here in auto). mk1-mk3 vws are easy, i've seen a few mk4 vw come out great. It really depends on the cost of parts and how much you like / have into your car. It cost me $300 to do a mk3 jetta that i paid $500 for, it had a bad auto transmission in it. I took about 7 hours. Totally worth it.
Things you would need for the conversion are: trans, axles, starter, flywheel clutch, backing plate, brake and clutch pedal, clutch cylinder, slave cylinder, clutch line, shifter,shifter linkage, surround for shifter, ecu reprogram or manual eschanged.
In your situation i would think the BEST solution is to buy a wreck with the drivetrain you want, and swap it all over at one time.
This will keep you from missing any small parts the would otherwise slow you down having to stop and order them.
Imho a very good, easily managed swap for your car (route i might take) would be a 20v out of a vw. the mk4 jetta uses the same mount idea, not placement exactly, but close enough, and the 1.8t has been swapped into everything so the wiring etc has been figured out. you can pair it up with any 4 cylinder vw tranny, and once its bolted in, you will only need custom axles made, either matched and sleeved, or complete customs both will work. your vw engine choices are very different than mine, so you might find a better swap..
You could also look into swapping in a vauxhall or opel driveline, but we dont have those cars so i can only look on in research, the newer 1.6t vxr engine z16let i think it is, looks like an identical engine bay to the 09 up aveo in the states..
its best to take the amount of you budget and see what you would get for that money, keep in mind youll almost always go 30% over..
