I guess we should be thankful no one accidentally put it on their pancakes..
You need to know what your fluids are if you are changing them. I'm not sure how confusing them should occur, if you drain the wrong thing, then you go to add more, its already full? So you would know you made a mistake.
no I meant that somebody could accidentally put engine oil in there. it looks like engine oil. I know it's not but somebody who didn't know could. the dipstick even says "a/t oil". im a mechanic-in-training, I just never had or encountered something with this oil. what brand do you use?
What I liked about fluids with different colors/odors... being able to diagnose the new leak on my driveway from my 1st generation Aveo.
You say:I smell a whiff of troll, baiting a response from the regulars here. No, A/T fluid is obviously a very different color than engine oil. In recent years GM even made the color of the oil dipstick handle yellow on the Aveo, probably to accommodate those who are illiterate in any language. But I think you already know the difference.Quote:

Einstein was right: "The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits."
Also, IMHO, those who feign ignorance are best ignored.
uh I wasn't trolling. I really wondered why they used this fluid. ive never owned or had to do anything with a vehicle using this fluid. just was curious if anyone knew the specifics on it. Im sorry I asked. and yes, I really am going to school to be a auto tech. is that a problem of some sort? I never took our transmission class as it was an elective and cost extra money. sorry to have offended
Don't worry about it red04fourdoor. Thymeclock gets fire ants in his pants every once in a while. We're all here to learn and help each other, sometimes we just forget that.
thanks Daox.
TBH, you should've taken those classes offered, better career options if you do. Even if you don't do them now, you should go back and do them later when you have the time/money.

we could buy 55gal drums of dyeless atf at school and it was AMBER. cheaper that way. here's an article explaining the color of atf without dye saying that it looks much like engine oil without it. I was just explaining before that some types of atf can be had without dye.
I should think I would know what atf looks like. my last vehicle had 320,000 miles when it went and it used a quart of atf every 2 weeks.
here's the article
Finding and Fixing Leaks - Eric The Car Guy- Stay Dirty!
That's quoted from your own source. I don't believe your statement about your 55 gallon drums of fluid being non-red.Quote:
Automatic transmission fluid is usually red. In fact, I can’t think of an automatic transmission fluid that isn’t red, but I could be wrong. Come to think of it, I think Porsche uses some form of manual transmission fluid in some of their automatic transmissions. Let’s just say, for the most part, automatic transmission fluid is red. Consult your owners manual or service manual to be sure. Believe it or not, the red color is added to the fluid to give it its distinction. Before the dye is added, automatic transmission fluid looks much like motor oil. The dye is added to make the fluid more identifiable.
But thanks for proving my point.
your welcome sir. I realize I was wrong. in the future, lets avoid each other since we cant seem to get along well.
as for the drums, you could. it was a local supplier here in Michigan. off brand of some sort. they could get it from the factory that way, or dye-ed if you wanted it that way as well. it was about $20 cheaper without dye. it was almost a clear color with a slight amber tinge. I didn't even think it was ATF until I smelled it.
what, you want a picture or something? I'm not taking classes there at the moment. I completed all my auto classes last year and an taking algebra right now.
Yo, that's my popcorn!
