      Thermostat mystery

So, I recently took my 2009 Aveo to a trusted mechanic because the engine light has been coming on intermittently. He told me there's nothing wrong that he can see, but that the problem might be originating from the thermostat.

We agreed to change out the thermostat, but then he balked -- because the one he bought didn't match the one in my car, he said.

I know almost nothing about these things, so I got him to show it to me -- here's a photo:

Can anybody tell me whether something's amiss here? Thanks in advance.

A couple months ago someone mentioned being told there was a different part depending on where the car was made.

My car is Mexican made (first vin # is 3) so maybe there is some truth to it. I'm not sure what part # the dealership put in mine, as I got it covered under powertrain warranty this past fall.

Or maybe your mechanic ordered a thermostat for a 2004 to 2008?

Thanks! I'll have to check my VIN, see if that's the case. I think my mechanic wouldn't get the wrong part, though -- they're really good.

I have a Chevy dealership nearby, just would prefer to give my mechanic the business, he's saved me hundreds of dollars on repairs over the years.
