took a ride in exist3nce's turbo optra

what a fun weekend, as some of you might know im moding my buddies 2004 optra (forenza for you US guys), and exist3nce offered us his apexi springs, so we drove to the street racing capital of Canada, and took a ride in the beast. its was snowing, about -3 degrees C, and the turbo optra had its summer shoes on, anyways hiting around 180kph (his car is in miles so we toched about 115) at about 10 psi. the car is very clean, and smooth. i had a video but it came out like ****, so only pics.

i want to turbo my aveo now

Its more fun to drive a slow car fast, rather than drive a fast car slow!

its the compressor side of the turbo, so items dont get in and mess up the blades.

But it does not stop the dirt. Not to mention it draws in hot air from under the hood.

oh I see what you mean now, no filter off of the turbo, yeah hopefully thats next on the list, although I have seen screens over the turbo in magazine's before

there are a lot of people that believe if there is something light enough to become air born, yet small enough to fit through the screen like on a screen door. it will not be able to harm your engine. as dirt particles flow through it normally anyhow, theoretically.

but i dont think i would take any chances on a car built sine the 80's. specs have become tighter, aluminum is soft. and tolerances on an impeller for a turbo are crazy tight.. maybe if you have a pinto, or flathead v8 you could reason like that.

Good luck with the cold side wheel. I have first hand experience with crappy filters and turbine wheels with my diesel, a little over a month with a K&N and it ruined a wheel because the turbo would suck the oil out of the filter (I'm pushing 40psi+) and let fine particles though, putting nicks in the blades. With that screen and this time of year with the city laying salt and sand down, your going to kill the motor along with the compressor side of the turbo.

The other thing I see is the crank case vent going to the mouth of the comp housing, weld a bung into the stainless tube and send it there. You don't need the oil being sent though the housing.

It would just seem like common sense that any air being pushed into an engine should be filtered and a screen is not a filter.

You dont want to do that because it will pressurize the crankcase under boost.
