heat it in boiling water for 10-15 minutes, put it in a vice, then twist it off. I don't think you can remove it without damaging it.
sawzall about 5" below it won't hurt itQuote:

Take it out
duh, you turn the car upside down and hold the pot up to the shifter...
But I don't know how to take it out, that's the problem.

have fun!
i have an automatic
I got really pissed off with mine and cranked it off with a pair of vice grips...
then on closer inspection i realized that it does not turn off at all.. it pulls straight up...
so when i was at the wreckers i practiced and my theory was right it does pull straight up with ALOT of force...
I dont know if that is the same with cars that have the Button shift knob mine is the older one that does nothing..
whole lever can be taken out by removing the clip at the plastic cage below. No need to turn the car around.
When you boil it you can just grab it with a rag and pull it off. I just did it saturday, and boiled it again when I was ready to reinstall it. Worked great and no vice marks on it.
Yes. no damage to knob. Just heat and pull it off easily.
wont a heat gun "melt" the knob? i mean the cover.
Boiling Water = Free
Bosch Heat Gun = Alot of money alot of us dont have.
Use boiling water and pull it out with a rag.
Anyone done a T-Handle shifter yet??? I have one in my jetta and really want one in my 09 aveo. I don't really need a shorter shifter. Does the stock 5 speed shifter have threads on it under that factory knob?
No threads! I thought it would have that to, but its actually just knurled metal (that fancy little diamond design so something has grip) and then the shift knob is pressed on. Like this thread states, you just take the whole shifter out of the car, boil the knob end for a while, grab it with a rag and yank it off.

That too straight forward LOL
what about that safety thing for reverse under the knob on an '09 (possibly other years, idk)? any issues with that after putting an aftermarket knob on?
you need to find a knob with a reverse lock out compatibility. They not hard to find, just a bit more money.Quote:

Look for Mitsubishi Evo knobs, they're easier to find and have almost the same design reverse lock-out as ours. the lock-out stays on the shifter assembly though, you just need a knob with a flat bottom.
Okay. you have to cut the rubber ball off first, the saw the plastic ball under neath in half in order to get it off!!
This means you can remove without damaging. IF YOU CAN NOT REMOVE THE STICK USE a hacksaw TO CUT THE Shift Knob (IS SERIOUS)
