      HAH! That was it--I had no idea. Now I feel ignorant again... that seems like fundamental knowledge I should have picked up by now. I've done my timing belt on the Aveo once before. And have felt moderately comfortable around a motor, but this--if I'd learned it before, had been forgotten.

      Hey all I know this an old thread but Im trying to pull the head on my 2004 aveo and it just simply will not budge when trying to take it off. i have everything undone so the only thing holding it together is the gasket. Any tips to getting it off without damaging the surfaces too badly?

      Rubber mallet under a cam sprocket, or pull up on the exhaust manifold. The head is aligned on the block with pins that hold it in place.

      Ok so I got the head off and looking at it and rotating the cams it does not look like there are bent valves..
      Also everyone seems to believe that this is an interference motor yet I can see on the pistons there is an indentation that is there for the valves to provide clearance so is it really an interference motor?

      Ok,
      put the spark plugs in, take off the cams. Then fill the combustion chambers with gasoline. See if the gas leaks through any valves to the other side. If no, then you are good to go.

      BTW my pistons also have the valve reliefs in them, but not as deep as yours...I’m not sure if yours are aftermarket, or GM changed them later on.

      lets hope for a good head!
