How to bypass power steering?

I think power steering is unecessary in such a small car. I'd like to bypass mine to improve power and efficiency. So how do I do it? I'm a real novice with cars. As far as the belt, do I simply purchase a smaller belt that will fit tightly around the remaining pulleys? If so, what size? I can measure myself to be sure. Then I guess I can remove the pump, reservoir, and lines; remove and drain the rack; then pack it with grease and weld it shut? Anything I missed? I'd love to simply replace the power rack with a manual rack, for the simplicity and reduced weight, but they don't make one to fit this car, do they?

Oh yeah, I have an 07 aveo SVM, so no AC.

Nothing to add? I realized that the pump is mounted on a bracket with the tensioner and a dummy pulley. I could remove the whole assembly and I would only have two pulleys left. It would leave a nice open space and possibly cut down on drag, but I'm still not sure what size belt I would need, nor would I know how to install it and tension it. (With the tensioner I usually just pull the belt on without tools.) Also, I think I will try looping the hose and see how that works before I go pumping the rack full of grease and welding it shut.

looping the rack works, but is still harder to turn than grease packed.

Yep, no manual rack for these cars.

Let us know how it works out, I agree these cars don't need it and it does give you more power and better fuel economy in the process (thus the change to all electric power steering on new cars).
