I'm guessing that the stock clockspring has all the connections needed for the installation. It would mean unnecessary parts for the manufacturing plants. Lean production would dictate that the same part would be used on all cars.

Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
Hey guys, how about part numbers? I asked my dealer about getting the cruise control put in my car, and they quoted me over $600!!
I have a 2006 LS Hatch..
Seriously hate my dealership.
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
It took me 3 tries to get just the switch from my dealer. They tried telling me they couldn't order it because according to the VIN, the car didn't have cruise. But they tried. First they ordered the headlight switch, then the wiper switch then finally ordered the cruise switch. By far the dumbest dealership I've ever dealt with. As far as part numbers go, the link on the how-to has the numbers but I'm not sure if they are correct.

Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
No question about it. I would have preferred to install the cruise switch on steering wheel same as oem. But find that install on plastic just behind wheel on top of column is very functional. The plastic panel on is easily removed. I did have to remove some of the plastic on the back side of switch so that it would set lower for mounting on the part behind the steering wheel. Had to drill 2 holes for mounting screws and a series of holes for a slot to place wires into switch. None of this was extremely difficult. I just ground or carved a little at a time until the switch conformed better to the plastic piece behind the wheel. I hope that I am describing location adequately. I really like the location and for now would consider it second only to oem steering wheel mount.
Good luck on steering wheel mount. I could not see either electrical or mechanical connection in my 08 after removing air bag.

Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
I'm going to try to do this tomorrow in my 06 svm. I've gone over this so much, I think I could do it in my sleep.
Looks like the Yellow wire in slot one is the hookup for the dash light. and you hook one of the inside terminals from the switch too it.
Im going to try that too. Will I need to add a bulb as well? Is that difficult?
Im a day late though, I got popped for 77 in a 55 the other day! Yuck! cruise should help keep me out of that kind of trouble from here on out.
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
wouldn't you set your cruise at 77? i would.
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
What size connectors did you use for the switch.
Radio shack only had some 3/16th ones, which seem like there not going to work.
suggestions anyone?

I'll post pics of mine soon.

Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
Thanks Clint.
I did the hookup yesterday and it didnt work. BUT.... I realize that I bought the wrong size wire taps, and I suspect Im not making contact at the plug. Just ruining the wires! doh!
Hopefully after I get the right taps on there, Ill be in business.
And I hope I didnt ruin the wires!!!
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
I tried the new wire taps today...still dosent work!
I bought the right switch and hooked it up according to the write-up.
I double checked all the connections.
Fuddled with all the buttons driving home nothing.
Maybe it dosent work on SVM models?? only models it was optional on?
Defective switch?? How the hell will I know?
oh well 25$ down the drain. What a dissapointment.
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
It does work on SVM models, I've been running it for months without any problem. Did you hook the wires to the 2 outer most pins on the switch?
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
Yeah, both Green wires with white stripe. From the bottom connector. Just as described.
Maybe I got a bunk switch? But how would I test that?
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
I'm not sure how you'd test it but if you return it, they might not take it back if they find out you hooked it up yourself. Dealers aren't supposed to take back electrical stuff after it's been plugged in.

some wont take any parts back once they leave the counter...
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
Thats may be true, but its not like I'd tell them I used it. I'd just say it wasnt what I needed.
Then there's always sellin it on ebay, if I end up feelin a little less than ethical.
But thats not the issue I think.
My first order of business is checking for continuity on all the connections I made.
I have to buy a continuity tester tomorrow and check things.
People are saying it works on SVM's...so I'm remaining hopeful.
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
hook the switch up to a battery and a light to see if you can turn the light on and off..
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
That will confirm the on/off function, that might not be the issue with the switch.
I wouldnt want to risk frying it, if a battery could do that. not sure what kind of voltage this thing works on.
continuity first. thanks though.
And thanks to all offering advice.
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
I would double and triple check the green/white wires you connected to as well as the connections. I recall there were more that 2, check the pin numbers i think it was 1 and 7. I doubt it is a bad switch, and it definatley works on SVM as that is what I have and it has worked for almost a year now. I used negative speaker wire terminals for the connection to the switch. Oh and not to forget the obvious, but you do have the on/off switch on the side set to on, right?

why? a 1.5 volt battery wont fry anything and will show continuity? a test light in the circuit will still come on and off.

Because it is not just an on/off switch. There is a logic board in there that controls the signal to the cruise control program in the ECM. Applying milivolts in the wrong polarity could easily make a chip toast.
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
ah.. ok. i was under the impression it was just an on/off switch from reading this thread.
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
i have 2009 aveo with manual transmission
is possible install cruise control?
exist a guide?
tnx
excuse my bad English

Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
Almost had an ass made out of u and me petri...you know the rest.
Rob, Thanks for the tips. I worked all day and couldnt test anything tonight....
Could testing the green wires with a continuity testor fry my cars ecm? Maybe I'll buy a good multimeter. I could use one.
I did make sure the thing was clicked on. I even tried it in off mode just to see if it would work that way.
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
Are you just going by the fact that the light in the dash isn't coming on so therefore the cruise isn't working?
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
hehehe No, I understand I didnt hook up the wire for the light.
I'll make sure the main on/off button is pressed into the on position.
I'll get to a speed above 35 mph. 40/50 ect..and press set.
I've tried to press and hold it for a few seconds. I've tried just a click. I'll release my foot from the pedal and the car just slows back down normally. You can usually feel when cruise kicks in...I dosent ever feel like it kicks in.
I've tried to press 'cruise' then 'Set' simultaniously, and still nothing.
I redid all the connections and I thought I solved the problem. I thought one of the t-taps did not cut through the insulation completely.
I test drove it again, nothing.
Repeat.. Test drove it, nothing,
Went to remove everything AND ONE OF THE DAMN GREEN WIRES COMPLETELY BROKE.
I got the ends stripped, twisted them together and taped them up for tonight. I'll have to solder in the AM.
My advice is not to use any type of t-tap.
Be prepared to cut your new aveo wiring and resolder, only to find out it just dosent work on your particular car.
Sorry, but this was my expirience.
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
I personally thing T-taps are a horrible invention. When I did mine, I just stripped back the casing and soldered the wires on.

Agreed, it's the proper way, I did mine the same way,and my remote start.

Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
Can u believe it, ...I got it to work.
:!:  8)
I checked the connections...I even dared to test continuity from the ends of my 2 wires to the tips of the connector just to be sure there was good contact being made.
(I was worried the small current could affect the pcm if it made it that far) fortunately it didnt.
I hooked the switch back up to the 2 outermost pins as instructed and drive off...
Still nothing...
So, I drive on thinking..."Well I know the signal must be making it to the switch"...so this switch is defective. I guess I'll have to return it.
And then I thought, hey why not try the other pins on the switch, just for the heck of it....
So Thinking maybe I had the configuration backwards i tried the 2 inboard pins
(the pins are in a row, 1234. The directions say 3/4 I tried 1/2....)
.....Sigh.....still nothing.....
Ok **** it, without even stopping I just took a wire out and plugged it back it at will....So now it was pins 1/3...
Click set..release gas....pure disbelief....I feel the cruise engage! car purrs on ahead full steam.
So wierd....My switch is either ****ed up or certain switches have different settings?
I dont know, maybe mines an anomoly.
But at least I got it to work. ...total cost...Just under $30..
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
Congrats, feels good saving money doesn't it?. I love telling people how much it cost to install cruise in the car and do it myself.

Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
this works only on cars with drive by wire right? so this would not work with my 04?
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
Yeah, Drive by wire only.
Not sure what years the change started.

Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
So anyone try this in an 'o9 yet. I want to, but I have better things to spend $25 on if its not going to work. Oh how I hate being broke all the time.

im going to tear into mine and do this. but i am haven't started yet since 09s have a new engine. i need to tear into it to see if the harness is the same before i buy the stuff. so i need to do it twice. and it got cold. and i spend most of my free time fixing broken cars not working on ones that already run.
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
mmk well let me know when you find out. I know about the cold. I just hate the cold slush rain we get.
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
This worked perfectly on my 08 SVE.
Thanks for the How-to.

Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
Hi guys quick question about this what is the difference between switch part #96813273 and #96433106 ?? I know the later one seems to be the one most people are using and i have seen pics of it but i see the first one mentioned.
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
When I got my switch, the parts guy said they're were 2 options so I just got the one they had in stock. I don't remember which one it was though. I presume they both work.
