Whats known about the front suspension rattle on the 06ish models..
I know I can't be the only one who has a suspension thats been rattling since new.
The stealership said they couldn't hear anything or something like that.
As soon as the pavement breaks up, or in a sharp turn the something rattles against the floor, and sounds just like a bad ball joint.
Is there some interference somewhere with a simple fix involved?
I'll be at my storage area tomorrow, underneath the car to try and get an idea about whats causeing the rattling, whats loose / interfering.
I have a feeling it has something to do with the sway bar..

Re: Whats known about the front suspension rattle on the 06ish models..
when i got under my car for my first oil change (first time i climbed under the car) i found 5 of the bell housing bolts had back out about an inch, including the ones that hold the rear engine mount..
just look under there quickly for loose bolts on all the suspension components.. k frame, rear beam, even check the exhaust pipe for signs of rubbing.

You're not driving an Aveo are you? :P
I found that the suspension noise seemed to come from both front and back in my case (2004). I did change the strut mounts but that didn't do much. It did seem to be a bit quieter from the front for a little while, barely.

Re: Whats known about the front suspension rattle on the 06ish models..
ratteling is usually 2 parts hitting each other. Like rabbit said, check for anything loose. Also, check the front shock towers to see if the "cups" are hitting them.
-
Re: Whats known about the front suspension rattle on the 06ish models..
On my 2004 I replaced the sway bar that connects to the strut on both sides and it seemed to have fixed the problem. I have a 2009 and the suspension is the same but it never made the creaking.

Re: Whats known about the front suspension rattle on the 06ish models..
I know on my 05 there is a ring around the exhaust pipe right in front of the flex pipe. I'm not sure where its supposed to be attached, but its not anymore. I'm sure it will rattle around. I know I've seen a pic on here with the same problem. I just can't remember where... I'll dig and see if I can't find it.

Re: Whats known about the front suspension rattle on the 06ish models..
Mine has that busted ring too.
But the sound I'm refering too is when the tires are rolling over pavement with steady light bumps.
Like a road thats been patched in places.
You can feel the noise in your feet, and it sounds JUST ;ike a bad ball joint wobbling around.

Now that my aveo is running, I know exactly what you hear. I have the same knocking sound, and it happens over real small bumps (and big ones of course). I plan on troubleshooting it soon.

Re: Whats known about the front suspension rattle on the 06ish models..
I got that too... I believe it's the front shock mounts that are compressed a little and make the cups hit the shock towers on the way up.

Re: Whats known about the front suspension rattle on the 06ish models..
I had my '08 aveo checked out at the local dealer in town on saturday. It has been groaning and squeaking for 2 years and I couldn't take it anymore. The service tech drove it for 5 minutes and was convinced that the control arms needed replacing (under warranty, thankfully). I'll report back on how it goes.

Re: Whats known about the front suspension rattle on the 06ish models..
You see I have a paper route and When I go on really rough roads I can hear the car make like a rattling noise I get out to check and I don't find nothing wrong. Even when I took my car to my teachers shop at the school Me an my friend checked everything for loose bolts and didn't find anything. We did discover the Struts are in need of being changed but with how much they cost since I Broke the back Windshield on the car and set me back about 545.45 on this. I got quotes from every shop in my area and they want from anywhere from $200.00 to $750.00, but my uncle says he can put them on for me but the problem would be that I would have to get the car aligned.

Re: Whats known about the front suspension rattle on the 06ish models..
For around $200 ($190 with free shipping to be more exact) you can get a set of very good KYB GR2 struts and shocks (change them all around front and back) and you can do it in about 2-3 hours of your time if you have access to a garage with a couple of jacks and 4 jack stands. You can rent spring compression tools at any local auto parts store... autozone takes the deposit on your credit/debit card in the amount of the price of them (around 50 bucks) and then gives you your money back when you bring it back in the same condition.
Here's a link of the set that I have (even same seller I think):
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/KYB-4-GR ... 500wt_1182
You will definitely feel the improvement over your stock shocks/struts and you will learn a little more about your Aveo... It's very easy and self explanatory if you're at least somewhat mechanically inclined.
They're alway two-way shocks/struts as opposing one-way that you have in there from the factory.

Re: Whats known about the front suspension rattle on the 06ish models..
Thanks My uncle and me can do this but I am going to wait until November to do it. Since I owe my mom 545.45 for what I did.

Yeah, I think thats what it is too. I was looking at my car last night while trying to fix my ignition problem. I noticed that mine looks very similar (worse actually) to byron84's in his strut mount replacement DIY thread:
front strut mount replacement
Thankfully, the strut mounts are pretty cheap (can be had for less than $20).

I have cut that thing off 2 years ago... yet the flex pipe still rattles like crazy.

I just had my flex pipe replaced because of noise. I wish I caught the noise a week sooner when I had the rest of my exhaust done.
After installing gary's header I started hearing a rattling noise at around 2k RPM and it sounds like its coming from one off the hooks that hold the muffler in place. It's sitting about 10 mm away from the pipe that's coming to the muffler and is only separated by the rubber mounting piece, so when the vibration is the highest around 2k rpm it's hitting the mounting hook. I will have to bend it away when I lift the car h hopefully sometime this week when my ultra racing sway bar arrives. Hope that gets rid of the vibration.

Re: Whats known about the front suspension rattle on the 06ish models..
Yup, the rattle/creaking sound is a signature of those models... i had my '07 LS checked, they said that the center plate bolted to the main bracket makes the sound. They also added that it's harmless since everything is tightly in place. It's just to damn annoying sometimes... That was two years ago, so far the sound didn't get worse nor disappeared.

Re: Whats known about the front suspension rattle on the 06ish models..
I found out tonight, that its my sway bar end links. Its loose and clanky where it attaches to the sway bar.
Anyone have any links to a good cheap set of endlinks? Anyone use custom heim joint end links?
-
Re: Whats known about the front suspension rattle on the 06ish models..
Just an update to what I posted above. I read in another thread that I might only need the updated sway bar bushings, and not new endlinks.
How easy or hard are these to install?
-
Re: Whats known about the front suspension rattle on the 06ish models..
I have a set up for custom links in development. Just can't get the big manufacturers to pay much attention to me with such a small order. They promise me "anytime now". they are designed to be used with coilovers But they would work with the stock suspension as well.
I have one stock endlink if you only need one.
The bushing are slightly more involved. But easy. Time consuming.
Seregy will warn you though. I think everything is easy.
-
Re: Whats known about the front suspension rattle on the 06ish models..
Keith, it's Sergey, not Seregy...
And yes, just because petrified.rabbit says it's easy, it's not always so. Even though I agree with him in sway bar bushings - they're easy but time consuming. But they did help with noise on my 06. Just make sure you order them with your VIN because some years have 17mm sway bar, and other ones are 18mm.

Re: Whats known about the front suspension rattle on the 06ish models..
excuse the iphone typing.. at least i started putting in the second "e" i think ill let the auto correct make it "serg" or "sergy" again..
i wonder was "postwhore" corrects too.. :P
-
Re: Whats known about the front suspension rattle on the 06ish models..
I take it you meant "what" it corrects to... ;) That's ok, iPhone is still superior to everything out there... if you put some duct tape :!: on the antenna that is..

Re: Whats known about the front suspension rattle on the 06ish models..
How is replacing the sway bar bushing....
What will I need a c-clamp? a press?
Do you need to remove the sway bar?
-
Re: Whats known about the front suspension rattle on the 06ish models..
lift the car. take the front wheels off. The sway bar bushings will be in plain site. if not, just follow the sway bar to the bushing. There are two bolts holding the bushing clamps, just loosen those (it's a little hard to get in there with the wrench, but it's doable). Take the old bushing off (I found it easier to slide it out towards the wheel when the pressure is off the clamp and take it off there, reverse to install). install the new one. you're done.
-
Re: Whats known about the front suspension rattle on the 06ish models..
Thanks...
Now I think there's been a misunderstanding....
The bushings or part I need is right at the end of the swaybar, where it connects to the endlink.
Its loose and making noise from right there.
Do I need new endlinks? Is there even a bushing at the end of the swaybar? Maybe mines hogged out and needs replacement? I hope not. Looks like I better pull a wheel and see.
-
Re: Whats known about the front suspension rattle on the 06ish models..
a good idea to begin with anyways. what's the mileage on your car? endlinks should last for a while...
-
Re: Whats known about the front suspension rattle on the 06ish models..
80K
I took the wheel off yesterday and the endlink to sway bar connection looked intact. I'm stumped.
If I have someone shake the car back and forth, you can feel the slop between the 2. But It seemed rock solid jacked up with the wheel off.
I tried unloading the suspesion with another jack and it still didn't seem loose.
-
Re: Whats known about the front suspension rattle on the 06ish models..
they are just ball joint ends. If yhe weight of the suspension was one the endlink, vs the suspension pushing the endlink up. i think it would probably "lock" into place.
jack the car up, take the wheel off. then raise the control arm with another jack. and then try to move the end link.
It would probably loosen up a bit that way if its bad. keep in mind, with the ball joint design even a little movement can transfer a lot of noise.
-
Re: Whats known about the front suspension rattle on the 06ish models..
Ok..
Confirmed the endlink has play.
Bought 2 new ones from the Dealership - Cheaper than Unadvanced auto.
Began removing pass side first....
WHAT A F*@KING Be0TCH!!!!!!
The nuts begin turning good then get REally tight before there all the way off....
Eventually the damn side that takes the 15mm wrench starts to strip!!!
I got the lower one out with vice grips. The top attachment is completely rounded and my vice grips just wont grab. I ripped the old end link away and now the ball stud is left attached until I get new and better vice grips. I couldn't put the new one back on. The end that can out intact is indeed loose and flimsy feeling. The new ones are super tight. at least for now.
At least the suspension rattle was nearly gone the whole ride home.
Hope the drivers side isnt so bad.
I put the wheel on and the car rides ok without one endlink attached
-
Re: Whats known about the front suspension rattle on the 06ish models..
Well, I got the new ends installed finally.
After I battled the one leftover stud that wouldn't come off, I finally won.
After that they went on without a hitch.
My disturbing suspension rattle is indeed gone! The car hasn't been this quiet over old roads since it was new. I thought about driving without the saybar even connected (no endlinks installed) but it was to 'floaty' out on the road.
Hope these ones last. seems the suspension puts quite a demend on these things.
