      Removing Rear Drum 2006 Aveo

      OK I think the engineers between Daewoo and Chevy came up with the most frustrating assembly or just plain evil.

      I know this question has been asked before (like a million times) and I have diligently read all of them. I can't get my rear drums off. <- please no comments from the peanut gallery GRIN.

      Here is a picture of my setup:

      This is my assumption: I think there is a center cap concealing a the big 35mm nut. I can see two different kinds of metal there. I think there is faint grove between the two parts. So I tried pulling this part off. I used the big pliers to pull the cap. I tried a screwdriver between the two parts.

      I tell you, it's not going. So I am asking for the sage advice of my fellow aveo owners who have done such.

      HELP! whimper....

      Just take out the two set screws if you just want the drum off. if you want to take off the drum with the hub take off the cap remove the center nut. Note: make sure the car is blocked good. Make sure the E-Brake is off to make sure it come off a little easier the pad be a little tight. You can use a two bolts if your not taking off the hub in the same tread size as the set screws help pop it off really tight. You tight them down even.

      ALL most forgot it help to get the set screws out if you have impact driver. Not need less chances off stripped screws.

      Using a screwdriver GENTLY pry between the hub and backing plate to start separating to two parts. Once loosen then use you hands to pull off the hub. And do make sure e-brake is off as Mr. Pontiac suggested.

      Great Pics...Now we just need a few more pics with detailed instructions for the step by step drum & shoe replacement!

      Once I got the screws out the first time, I threw those away. I have never had any problems without them. Chevy used to use clips on the lugs to hold the drum (on older cars) instead of the screws. Growing up in Detroit, it was explained to me that they were just to hold the drums on along the assembly lines until the wheels were bolted on. (We always broke them off and didn't worry about them anymore.) I don't know if that was completely true or not, but I have not experienced any negative side effects by leaving the screws out. It does make it alot easier to get the drums off in the future. I take mine off every time I rotate the tires or switch out the snow boots and hose out all of the brake dust.

      PS- I've found that when prying off the drums with a screw driver as shown above, it usually helps to take a rubber mallet and bump the drum with it while holding pressure on the screw driver. This helps to free the brake shoes from the drum if they are tight. Also it helps to coat with anti-seize or grease the surface area of the hub where it contacts the drum, especially around the center circle of the drum. This will help prevent the drum from becoming rusted on the hub and make it much easier to remove next time.

      Nice Tip. Once I have everything apart and working on my rear trailing arm, I will post pics on the brake shoe replacement. I am going to have to brake (pun intended) the hydraulic lines to remove the sub-assemblies form the trailing arms.

      please post the pics of the trailing arm work as I think I need to replace the trailing arm bushings as well.

      So remove those 2 screws and the drum will come off? I just want to paint them? and then when i am done just replace the screws? Do i have to be careful of over tightening or anything? or just tighten them back on until they are tight.
