Possible help upgrading sound system in 2009 Aveo 5 Hatchback M/T

Hey all!

I really would love to upgrade the sound system in my 2009 Aveo 5. The music is lacking depth very badly and am thinking of getting new speakers. Any suggestions as to which speakers I should get for the front doors and for the hatch? I have a four speaker system in the car.

What size should I go with? Also, any suggestions on brands of speakers? I plan on buying the speakers through crutchfield.com

I think I have heard people say they got 6x9s in the doors. They were able to do that by getting a 1in spacer. What is a spacer and what does it take to get those installed?

I am relatively new to installing things in the car so I have a lot of questions.

Any ideas as to how I should go about this?

6x9s in the doors? lolno. Most you would fit is a shallow 6.5" with a 1" spacer

In the front door. I've seen people install among 4, 5.25, 6.5".

I can't post pictures right now because I'm on my cellphone, but a spacer is only needed with the 5.25 and 6.5
It looks like a piece of wood to be honest (I saw it on another thread on this forums).

Thanks guys! Alright. So I am thinking of getting the 6.5's for the front doors. Will they also fit in the hatch area? Or should I get a different size for in the back? Also, any recommendations on certain speakers? And would it matter which spacers I get? Are they universal? Like, Can I get the two 6.5 speakers and just a couple 1" spacers and know they will fit together? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to make sure I get all the right parts at once that way I don't have to send anything back and I can install these with as little struggle as possible.

I believe the mounting holes are industry standard/universal. I could be wrong, however.

The rears are 4x6"s. You can put 6x9's in the hatch cover though.

So even though the rears are 4x6's I can put in 6x9's? Will I need a spacer or some sort of modification for that or should they just fit? Maybe that is where I heard people saying they were putting 6x9's in their car XD

^no you cant put 6x9s in the stock area. The hatch cover that hangs from the back hatch is where you can put them

Oh alright. So it isn't in the stock area. Do I need to get anything else to keep them in place? Thanks Pickles. You're helping out quite a bit.

This a great place for getting help! You would just need to cut 2 roughly 6x9 ovals into the cover, then a couple of short wood screws and your good to go.
I still have my 6x9s that are waiting to be put in lol

Ok I gotcha. What should I use to cut the ovals? I don't have much experience working on cars. Very little in fact. So I am taking this car as an opportunity to gain some man points. I have a friend who works on cars a lot. He'd probably have the necessary tools. Anything else I should consider?

You can use quite a few things. A mini hand hacksaw (start the hole with a drill) or a sawzall/reciporacating saw, a dremel (my personal favorite, definitely recomend you get one if you dont have one), or a handheld jigsaw.

See that thing folding upwards? With the strings it attaches to the rear hatch door. That piece is what you would put the 6x9s in. Also, its 6.5" in the doors

also, you wont need an amp, however it is recommended. Get some high rated speakers, maybe 100WRMS each, NOT 100W max each. Then get a nice 600w amp. I have always like kenwoods' mid level stuff however alpine has been putting out some great stuff lately, their v-power amps are the tits

Oh I got ya. Yeah, my aveo didn't seem to come with that hatch cover. So I may have to go out and get one. That is why I wasn't sure what you were talking about. If I get an amp, How do I set that up? I know the speakers wire into the amp. Where do I wire the amp into? Man. There is a lot more to consider than I thought.

If you have an aftermarket head unit then you should have RCA outs. Just run rcas back to the amp and a remote line with the RCAs. Then on the other side of the car you would run a power cable from the battery through the firewall into the car to power the amp. If you have a factory radio then you would run a hi lo converter

Alright. Now, could I get some speakers. hook them up to the factory head unit. And later on, install the amp, maybe a sub if I still feel I need more depth, and an after market head unit? Could I get speakers first and then build off of them later on? Also, since I do not have one of those hatch covers. Any other areas you can think of to put the 6x9s?

Yes you can do that. And you could get 2 6x9 boxes at like Walmart for maybe 20 bucks. Then just put those in the hatch

Yep. Just use a couple splice taps on the factory wiring
