So has anyone seen any rusting on the Aveo yet? It's been about 5 years since the first Aveos rolled out (2004 model). I personally dont have any, but I was just wondering what the situation was from people around the country.

little bit of surface rust from where the paint was chipped from rocks during highway traveling, but nothing too major, I may have the small rust spots looked and and re-coated so it doesnt get any worse.
i got corrosion in the engine bay and random parts rusting but no body panels or anything.
Purchased my 05 new... no rust. nothing... then again I live in Vegas which is pretty good on cars... with the exception of paint, batteries (replaced a few weeks ago) and anything susceptible to melting as it can get to 150+ inside a car during the day.
all good in NY still. have an 04 sedan, no rust yet. 82000 miles
04 hatch, 1year in Pa, 5years in Va... has gone through plenty of winter storms and mud/gravel, etc...
Haven't seen a single bit of body rust... expected corrosion forming in the engine bay (on bolts, etc).
i have that same weird "white" calcified corrosion on the nuts and bolts. the most offensive corrosion was the one that kept me from opening the airbox where the filter was.
nothing yet on my 04
aha i found some everybody take off your spoilers and look at the holes in the hatch
update on my 04 sedan. 85000 miles, and the only actual rust i have is where the license plate lights are. the screws on the left light are fine, and the screws on the right light are rusted. go figure.
06 aveo rust on my window wiper arms but no where else
So far the only rust I've encountered is on the right license plate bolt, as well as on the screw for the right hand license plate light. I took the cover off it and it was full of water. Can't figure out how it got in there though :?:
same here on my '05 with about 80,000 mi, only on the wiper blade arm
Hey awesome question.
I'd be one to be able to answer, as,where I live, Cars rust out fast.
I have some rust where the paint chipped off my wiper arms at the pivot. I think some shady tech swapped wiper arms on me, during a dealership service (the blade was suddenly bad too) but I cant prove it. Seems like someone must have scraped the paint for it to flake off there. anyone else notice this?
I've noticed that leaves and 'helicopters' like to collect near the hood hinges...around here, that will be a source for rust, So I'm always cleaning them out.
Inside my hatch area I can see that the hatch hinges and other area's are going to need to be watched for rust.
Seems that, keeping it well washed, dried and oiled, will keep the rust at bay for years to come.
Oh...One fair sized rock chip in the hood, turned an oxidized color before I got to it with the touch up paint. I have my eye on that spot too.
Rust and mild oxidation isnt all a bad thing.
Its actually a message that oxidation, is happening, but you have time to do something about it.
The Zinc coating applied to metal as protection is actually meant to rust.
Nothing can really seal away the oxidation process from steel, so the idea behind a zinc coating (a much softer metal substance) is to give itself up first.
So that there is time to blast the metal clean and re-apply a new zinc coating, for the oxidation gremlins to munch on.
The average daily driver to rust ratio around here is 10 years.
I now see 98 cavaliers with the lower corners rusting out. along with the bottoms of the doors.
10 years!? thats not bad.
i see 2 and 3 year old cars around here rusting. particularly low line models like Kia, hyundai, etc.. but even honda 1/4 wheel wells, like common on older hondas, start really early.
on the plus side you car came with corrosion warranty. use it. if something is rusting prematurely, they should have to fix it for you. free of charge. but this is voided if you had them add any undercoating or went to ziebart or anything like that.
when i worked for volvo we are replacing or repairing crusty hoods that were up to 10 years old. seems the factory went with a spray on primer, so where the inner and outer panels overlapped, there was nothing but bare metal.
The only rust on mine is the exhaust manifold, so it's clean so far.
Here's a place where rust may likely start: down in the front side fender wells where they bolt to the rockers. There's always a pile of leaves and mud trapped in there, and I periodically take off the mud guards in the wheel wells to clean them out. The road debris seems to kick up into a small opening in the seam between the mud guard and the fender panel, and drops down to the bottom. So far that's the only real preventative rust measure I've taken.
bump
Cleaned out these troughs again today, boy they were chock full of road debris!!
I would recommend everyone do this every month or so to avoid rust forming in the future from pent-up moisture in this area.
There are small plastic troughs that wrap under the rocker panels underneath which funnel the water out of the compartment, but they get clogged so easily and its just builds up.
Remember, even on today's cars rust CAN happen if the conditions are right
and once it gets inside of a rocker panel, there's no stopping it.
Just from experience of repairing rusty rockers on other cars...
rust is the flesh eating disease of cars.
06 hatch, noticed the same pivot point on the wiper blade last year...maybe we need a recall?> LOL
I've also noticed a lot of corrosion in the engine compartment.
Must be a western NY thing with the wiper arms, lol.Quote:

The other car I collect...same exact thing...they had these 'self cleaning' rockers,
That would get filled with stuff. Most owners never knew, and many of the cars suffered lower frame damage, becoming useless in 10 years.
So far mine still appears to be doing well
Especially important in the northern states, where salt is sprinkled all over the roads. I'm near the beach in Florida, so the salty air is not much better and I want to make this car last forever... lolQuote:

See the pics! This area will surely rust through if this is left unattended. Might take a few years, but watch and see.
I'd suggest taking the lower 2 or 3 bolts out and spraying with high pressure water.
I went balistik on mine and cleaned them with my hands and some tools, even an old toothbrush to really it clean. Then I smeared some old wax I had all over inside of there.
Don't use anything that will scrape the paint, or you'll be in for big rust.

Yes, thats something sprouting on this pile...
Hey monz, I dont think thats what they meant buy "go green" when they sold you your aveo lol.
Lol, No doubt dude.
Beetle owners think there cool with the dinky flower vase in the dash, heck, we got a full flower pot in each fender.
After seeing Monzaveo's pic I'm definitley going to check my inner fenders.
i checked mine when i was fitting the side skirts, and i'll be damned if there wasnt a 3 inch thick, packed like concrete, pile of what i can only call silt. i have no idea how that crap got in there, i had to pull the weather stripping out to get in.Quote:

I guess I will just make it part of the maintaince I do during oil changes. I was pissed though because I found damage from my car being put on a lift to get new tires  As for rust, the inside of the fender is good but the rocker panel has been complete stripped of paint and primer so metal is showing and oxidizing. So this I am taping off the effected section and sanding and cleaning it. Then spraying a good coat of Chip Coat paint to stop this from happening. I also notices some rust on the subfame just behind the engine compartment so I will do the same with that.
As for my rust report I have found rust forming in the rear fender wells on both sides in the same spots and the front edge of the hood near the headlights is rusting, in the same spots.
I just want to add that i I hate road salt.
Just for reference, here's a graphic image of just how much damage road salt can do:

The pic is of my 92 geo metro. It was driven in Ohio for most of its life before I acquired it.
the only rust on mine is the stock header
The muffler is rusting like a beast on my '07.. oh well another excuse to do the side pipe  and I have some on the rear wiper other than that nothing 8)
