I was curious about this at first too. I did some research and found my information via the links below. I don't like the fact that the "e-tec" name infers that it is a shortened name for the "eco-tec" to the uninformed consumer, which is a more recent and superior engine.
The E-tec II is a GM Family I engine and the Eco-Tec II is a GM Family 2 engine. Info below.

The eco-tec is just a newer engine design with more technology built into it. When I got my 2005 Aveo I was pretty surprised at how little technology it had. No variable valve timing was probably the biggest thing. The e-tec II's compression ratio of the engine is also pretty low compared to the eco-tec at 9.5:1 vs 10.8:1. The eco-tec is also a much more efficient engine as you can see from the mpg ratings of the 1st vs 2nd gen Aveos.

According to Wikipedia; The E-TEC II pushes out ~103 HP, and ~107 ft/lb torque. The ECOTEC (2011 and up) 1.4L (turbo) pushes out ~138 HP and ~148 ft/lb torque, and the 1.8L pushes out ~136 HP and ~123 ft/lb torque.

So that's mean that ECOTEC is not on 1.6L version anymore?

      the 2010 Ecotec IS a 1.6L, but the Sonic has moved to a Turbocharged 1.4L, and a N/A 1.8L

All the official specs can be found here:

Horsepower ratings do change slightly from year to year.
