Is there a guide to replacing the timing belt?

      Title says it all.

I have a 2008 aveo approaching 100k and I'm looking to replace the timing belt. Is there a guide to help me along the way? I am a heavy equipment technician apprentice so I know my way around a machine, but cars are a touch different and I have yet to change a timing belt.

      Any assistance would be wonderful.

Also, what price is a decent one for a timing belt, and what other components should be replaced?

edit: Also, i'm getting a rough idle condition on start up and I plan to check some of the possible reasons for this on the weekend. It's possible that it could be a valve setting issue, no? This is one of the last things i will check and I'm curious what the proper valve lash setting for the 1.6l is.

      Thank you!

There is no lash to adjust as the valves have auto adjusters. I'd search the forum for a how-to on changing the timing belt. In the how-to, you'll be shown how to properly set the timing. Just look in the How-To section.
I leased Pontiac Wave from September 2006 to August 2011.

The 2009 and later have adjustable valves, though

You can click on the link at the bottom of my post. It's not the best write up, but its what I did, with pictures and description, to change the belt. There's a link there to order a belt kit through amazon if your interested.

Good luck. I'd have the plugs and wires changed too, and see if the rough idle goes away. Also... you may want to hold the cam sprockets together with tie wraps. Not a bad idea at all.

      Thank you for the replies.

I have found a walkthrough that seems to do a good job of explaining the job.

The spark plugs were replaced recently...10k or so ago...but the wires were not. I will look into getting new ones. It should be said that the car is only rough when first started and sometimes when stopped, such as at a red light. When acting rough when stopped, it seems like it wants to lurch forward.

      Rough Start Idle

I was having the same issue with my 2008 a while back. Only mine got the the point where I wasn't even able to accellerate. Replacing the wires did the trick.

Usually when a timing belt is replaced you should also replace the water pump and the timing belt tensioner. Since the job is substantial and these items are in the same inconvenient area it's best to replace them all at the same time

You can go to www.youtube.com for ideas. They have several videos on replacing timing belts although I could not find one that was Aveo specific.
