Rear End Going out?
Did a search, had to post. '04 hatchback, transmission shifts good. When I come off the interstate at cruising speeds, the rear end will slam hard if I don't let it coast out, so to speak. Feels like the rear end, could be the tranny ? Have had the car for less than 2 years, gone from 88K to 180K miles. Barely noticeable to begin with, bad now. Recent work includes complete top end with belt and pump, plug wires (they were toast and actually made the tranny shift weird), tires and brakes solid.

Have u ever checked engine/trans mounts??
-
No, but when I first got the car, I posted a few questions here. One was that the car had a shimmy when accelerating up hill. Some one replied that it was most likely my engine mounts. Have not worried about them, still has that shimmy but never a problem. Any advice on checking them? Have read a few posts, confused on part#s and qty of engine and tranny mounts. Seems I need to check and replace ASAP

rear end as in the back of the car, or rear end as in diff in the transmission?
is the hard slam in the front or rear of car? do you feel it in the steering wheel?
-
Back of the car slams hard, do not feel it in the steering wheel. If I have been at highway speeds for a while, and let off the gas, I have to nurse the accelerator gently or it slams hard. Does not occur around town.

It could be anything on the rear axle. The car does have 180k... I'm thinking it could be axle bushings or shock mounts.

it is most likely one of these three things.. the shock or shock mount.. the brake drums are hanging up, or the rear axle bushings.

Thanks VERY much folks. I now have a game plan. Awesome forum here.
