can the engine throw a code without the "check engine light" coming on?

      no.

but the engine can have a cel and "reset" itself thus shutting the light off and no code being saved.

however, a body or transmission code could *could* possibly be set without the cel being on.. however they typically set a light on for thier systems (airbag, transmission, etc).

It is also possible that the light could go off just by simple disconnecting the batter for 10 -15 minutes

yes, but you'll also lose the Fuel Adaptives (basically, the PCM will have to Relearn how your Right foot behaves; I.e: if you have a feather touch on the throttle, or if you are a Leadfoot.)

You can have "pending" codes too. But you pretty much always have those
