p0012 fault code "Camshaft position timing over-retarded"

Hi all :p

Glad i found this forum because i have a problem with my aveo from 09.
This week my check engine light was lighting up.
I connected a obd2 to the car and got a fault code p0012 which means "A camshaft position timing over-retarded (bank 1)".
Does anyone know a simple fix for this problem?
I was hoping that it is caused by a damaged sensor or something like that so i can fix it myself. If this is the case does anyone know what sensor it could be? :confused:

If it is not the case what else could it be? maybe timing of the camshaft is of?

A couple of possibilities 1) timing belt needs changing 2) cam position sensor is failing. if you take the air box out you can access the upper timing belt cover and inspect both. Maybe your cam sensor has failed.

Thanks! think ill start with replacing the sensor cause thats a cheap one. check if that resolves the problem. If not than look ill look further :)

Follow up feedback is nice when you do find a resolution and what it took to fix it. If you do replace the timing belt, replace the pulley and tension as well.

whats the quality of the engine oil? because it sounds like the Intake Cam VVT Actuator may be faulty.

The engine oil was changed two weeks ago in the garage, so it is new. strange that this happens after maintanace but i see that as a coincidence. by the way, the check engine light is now off again, but after while of driving it goes on again. (btw.sorry for my bad english)

Hi,

Have you found what your problem was?

I have exactly the same error code P0012 and a Chevy garage diagnosed a camshaft position sensor (Intake) fault. I took the car away because the price he quoted for the part and repair was out of this world...

I bought the sensor replaced it, had someone who plugged into the car and deleted the error code, but the check engine light is back on again! :(

Is there anything else I should check?

I have code p0014, so same issue, different cylinder. Looking for a solution....

I still haven't found a solution. Replaced camshaft sensor, cleaned both VVT valves and swapped them over...didn't help
