How Do I Determine If the Engine is the Original?

I bought my 2005 Aveo as a repo and it had several issues which are now resolved 37 mpg on the last tank (no freeways within 70 miles of me) Anyways, I would like to ascertain whether the engine is the original or swapped out. Can anyone advise me?

there Should be either a Partial or the FULL VIN that's on your dash/doorjamb stamped somewhere on the Block either on or Near the Bellhousing. (

How did the oil look when you originally got it? Chances are if the prior owner couldn't make the payments, they also didn't maintain the oil properly . If you determine it's the original engine, you might want to do 2 or 3 faster oil changes in an attempt to clean things up. Also (again if the original), the timing belt, WP, etc. probably hasn't been done yet, so you'll have to think about getting that done asap. Good luck with it!

The oil wasn't bad. I did do the timing belt and water pump as preemptive measures. It really looks like it turned out to be a steal as the original engine is in there and it is running beautifully and a joy to drive

      Hi Wiseguydave,

After checking my resources, I found that two sources can be used to identify an engine. They are the engine casting number and the engine code. Both of these sources are required when seeking engine size and horsepower.

The casting numbers will identify the cubic inch displacement (CID), .i.e. 350 CID of the engine.

The engine code identifies the specific vehicle the engine was equipped with from the factory, the engine production code, the horsepower rating, and the compression ratio. This code can be found in one of two locations depending on engine size. Casting numbers for V-8 gasoline engines will be located in these locations, depending on make of engine. Chevrolet (1955 - present) - on driver's side, top left rear of block.

      Hope this information is helpful.

if you are talking about the RPO Codes, they are inside the Glove Box Lid. the VIN is in Various locations throughout the car, such as Stamped off center into the Firewall, on Anti-Theft labels on every major body panel, stamped on the Engine/Transmission Bellhousing towards the radiator, the RPO Label on the Glove Box Lid, the VID Label on the bottom of the Driver's side B-Pillar, and of course, riveted on the dash at the base of the windshield.
