I recently had the timing belt replaced on my 2005 Aveo by a professional mechanic. About a 1,000 miles later, I changed the valve cover gasket myself. It was then that I noticed the installed timing belt was not as wide as the camshaft pulleys. Should I be worried? I am going back to ask the mechanic ""why" but he could tell me just about anything because I am not an expert. I will try to upload a photo to show what I mean.
thats interesting, honestly, but if it runs the car (correct length, number of teeth, etc) then it is the right belt..
oem and aftermarket do not need to match 100%, but ive never seen a timing belt that looked that narrow either.
My fear is that it may come off without warning. I will question the mechanic tomorrow and post his reply here.
belts on timing gears kind of "self center" between all the pulleys... Its also under tension, so its unlikely that it will come off.
I just returned from talking with the mechanic who changed my timing belt. He said that it is "normal" for some crankshaft pulleys to be wider than the timing belt and that the belt would not come off. I hope he is right.
Now, I have a more urgent problem. My car won't start. All I did was replace the valve cover gasket but somehow I must have unknowingly changed something else also. I will search thru the forum for advice and/or start a new thread. Thanks for being there.
check the connection of the spark plug wires, the order and that they are on securely.

I think that you are on the right track. I checked the order of the wires (1-3-4-2) and I am 95% sure that it is correct. I reattached the wires to the spark plugs and this time the engine actually sputtered like it was going to start. Previously, it had not even done that much. So, tomorrow, when I have more time, I am going to clean or replace the spark plugs and wires and see what happens. I'll get back to you in a day or two depending upon my progress. Again, thanks.
Changing the plugs and the wires is not a big deal since I planned on doing that anyway after replacing the gasket. They were contaminated with oil
Great news! I replaced the plugs and the wires and the car started. It was a cheap fix. Rockauto was having a closeout on some Bosch wires so I got the wires and the Autolite plugs for $27 including shipping. Thanks again for your help.
Update on the timing belt issue? Not really an issue?
I was replacing the thermostat on my wife's 04 and noticed the belt looked exactly like yours (it's from a Gates kit).
I put in a complete Gates kit with water pump and it looked the same as yours, should be no problem as they self center.
