changing belt question-tensioner

Does the Aveo have an adjustable belt tensioner or is it self adjusting? If you can manually adjust it, where is it!

I read that 2007 is automatic, but is the 2005?

It is an auto adjuster. You actually use the water-pump as the tightener until the tensioner is at a marked location.

To adjust the water-pump you need the special tool, or a 42mm crow's foot wrench

Ok this is how I have my belt set up but i'm getting a lot of squeeking, someone please correct this image if wrong to show the correct routing of the belt.

It's the alternator...


loosen the bolt on the slider, get a prybar and put it down against the engine, then push back towards the firewall, tightengin the bolt when you get as far as you can with reasonable force.

So you can slide the alternator pulley to adjust the tension? is my pic the correct way to route the drive belt?

After looking through the service manual, seems you rotate the tensioner pulley clockwise to remove the belt, counterclockwise to re-install it.


As for tension, I haven't a good idea. Seems my knowledge of the Aveo motor isn't the same as the Lanos :oops:

The squeaking primarily comes from two places, a worn belt or a worn belt tensioner. Tensioner is under warranty (if you still have some).

Maybe check with a brand new aveo how hard the tensioner is and check yours, shouldn't be a big difference. A worn belt tensioner will under-tighten the belt and cause the squeaking.

Also, if your belt is too long (they do stretch over time), the tensioner will be at it's farthest spot and won't be able to tighten the belt enough.

yeah i got it all taken care of, it was on wrong but now it's right and runs like a champ, thanks
