Cat-Back begins Where?

I went to a muffler shop the other day to get an estimate of what it would cost to put in my Muffler. They said $325 with a Dynomax and $425 with a Magnaflow exhaust.
While I was under the car he told me that 'It kind of be impossible to do a true cat-back on an Aveo' because of where the 2nd O2 sensor is. That we'd have to leave the piping and the O2 sensor in place and do the piping from there, or actually we'll leave the flex piping too and so you might as well just install the exhaust from the flange just before the resonator(no pic of flange).
I got pics of the 1st O2 sensor, manifold, and Cat.

use the [img] tags to post an image directly, though URLs are appreciated by the slower and 56k users.
A cat back is just that... from the catalytic converter back. A good shop should have no problem cutting a hole and making the O2 sensor fit and function properly.

Thanks Exodus for the image advice.
I understand the Cat-back idea, the thread is to discuss what you can do with that strange pipe with the O2 sensor.
What your saying is just take off that pipe and replacing it with a new one and a cut out hole for the O2 sensor?

OK here is the final word on this subject. Run it from the flange back, the pipe coming off the flex pipe is 2", I've been talking with some daewoo guys about this. don't go more than 2" on this engine unless you turbo it. on the factory piping it goes from 2" to 1 3/4 . Just run 2" out to the back and you will be set. If you want better flow out of the manifold, get a header like I did. I'm getting my exhaust redone in a week, going 2" all the way out.

only other option than making a new hole or the anti-foul, is to use a new cat with an o2 bung in it. But you said you wanted a catback system not a whole new exhaust. Since you cannot do a true catback, as brian said, your next best thing is from the flange on the flexpipe. But instead of running 2" i'm running 2.25".
If you dont want to spend the money modifying a header like Brian did you can always just port match the exsisting exhaust manifold, but of course you wont get as good of flow as a header, but it's better then nothing

Well then.
I guess I'm going to go with Brian's suggestion of 2" from the flange, put on a new resonator(18" or 24" haven't decided), and a new muffler. I'm sure that even these simple, not drastic, changes will help the performance of the car.
Besides, I don't want to hear the wife saying to me 'WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO TO THE CAR? WHY COULDN"T YOU LEAVE WELL ENOUGH ALONE?'
To my knowledge there's only 2 members that have modified their exhausts cat-back, Brian, Daniel.
This post and subsequent link really helped me to put changing the exhaust into perspective.

sounds great and i can say for sure it increased power because i dynoed and got 7+ more hp and 3+ more torque

It's done. The new exhaust is on the car. I told the girl(very knowledgeable) in the shop that I wanted 2" pipe from the flange back with a resonator and the muffler that I choose.
Turns out the muffler that I choose would only fit if I had it angled weirdly sideways coming out the back. Whatever.
So, I went with a different Magnaflow muffler that was offset on one side and offset on the other side and then a Magnaflow tip.
When it was installed and everything I went to take a movie of it and noticed that the guy had left one of the stock resonators and didn't go from the flange back with 2" pipe. I was like . Then the guy turned on the car and OMG it was SO much louder than the stock one. Truly I didn't know what to expect. I said leave the other stock resonator and the 1"7/8 pipe. The guy went 2" pipe from the second(new) resonator that he put on back to the muffler.
To recap, flange stock 1"7/8 pipe, stock resonator, 1"7/8 pipe, new resonator, 2" pipe to muffler.

sweet, feel a difference? Personally I went with 2.25" piping but to each his own as long as you're larger then stock and you dont go to large (like 3" with no other mods, lol)

This is an update.
I phoned the place where I got my exhaust work done and kinda complained that it wasn't right. They said bring it in and we'll fix it up for you.
NOW what I got on my car is:
2" from the flange back to a flowmaster hi-flo resonator then 2" to another flowmaster hi-flo resonator then 2" all the way back to my magnaflow exhust and tip.
I went with 2 resonators not because of back pressure issues, but because of sound. I like the rumble that the muffler gives and I didn't really want to distort that by making the middle of the car louder. Definitely happier. I love how I have a zippy little car. It was $560(parts and labour) well spent.
My next mods are going to be the Spark plug wires and probably the grounding kit.
