Late reply, sorry - did you make a decision on this?

Was 5th completely missing, or would it pop out?

I once bought an old VW Golf that the previous owner said wouldn't stay in 5th gear. I turned out it was just low on gear oil, which would cause it to heat up & pop out of gear. (Though it would run in 4th OK). Luckily no permanent damage -- topping up the oil fixed the problem completely.

if you drop the trans, replace it. dont want to have to have it removed twice.

I would have to think a junkyard gearbox would be less expensive than having repair work done on a broken one.
