2004 to 2008 was a completely different 1.6L engine. 2009 was the 'same' Ecotec engine. As for why it's not considered interchageable, I'm not sure. You might be able to make it work by swapping whatever sensor(s) is different (for example, not sure), but maybe someone else knows.
Yea I'm not sure either it's aggravating because 10-11 engines are harder to find and more expensiveQuote:
