2010 Chev Aveo 1.6 LS engine whine problem.

My name is Shaun and I am from Cape Town, South Africa. I'm posting a query on behalf of my girlfriend.

A bit of background to the problem...

The engine has always had a whining sound for a few years now. It has never really been a problem. A few months ago the cam belt snapped and it bent valves. The head was reconditioned and new, valves, belts, tentioner and water pump were replaced. It goes well but the only problem is the whining noise from the engine. It almost sounds like it has a supercharger. Can it be the hydraulic steering pump, AC pump or alternator? I'm hoping anyone might know what it could be. I have attached a video.

Any help and advice would be appreciated.

      Shaun

To me, it sounds like a bearing is on its way out; have you tried taking the drive belt off and seeing if the noise goes away? If it does, I would start by manually spinning the pulleys (alternator, power steering pump, A/C compressor, idler, and tensioner) and feel if any of them are rough. If one does feel rough, congratulations you found the source of your whine!

      An excellent response!

Or, you could find a nice strong cheese to go with it!

Edit: Nice to see a successful outcome.
The origial post reminded me of a Citroen (DS) Hydraulic Pump failure back in the '80s.

I recommend a nice sharp cheddar with that whine.

      Quick update:

I took the Aveo to the local mechanic. It turns out that the power steering hydraulic pump has failed. The bearings are worn and possibly the vanes.

I am going to replace it with a new one.

Thanks to all for the advice.
