2010 Aveo Compression/Piston Slap

Hello,

I recently purchased a 2010 Aveo with 46k miles. I've noticed on cold starts that the engine makes a loud noise similar to what I would call a piston slap. The noise then dissipates after the car has warmed up. I took the car back to the dealer and asked them to perform a compression test. The results were 230,230,225,230 psi. I personally haven't seen a 4 cylinder car read over 200 psi, unless it had performance work done to the engine.

Is it common for these cars to have piston slap?
Does 230psi seem like it's a legit reading for this car?

As far as I've seen on this forum, piston slap is not an issue at all.

Those numbers do seem high, but they're grouped close. I'd be happy with them. The tech's gauge calibration could be off.

Thanks for the reply! I am definitely pleased with the results from the compression test. From yours and other peoples experience, piston slap shouldn't be an issue and the engine will last a relatively long time with regular maintenance?

My suggestion is, If you suspect piston slap, check for dust in the air filter and associated inlet pipe work and manifold.

From my experience, premature piston wear is usually a result of "dusting", caused by the failure of the air inlet plumbing and/or the filter itself when operating in extreme dusty conditions, like we have here in the most of Australia.

Also look behind door seals and window rubbers for signs of (red) dust.
